TPP Insight: "Changes" - Navigating Changes in a General Election.

Despite polls and media speculation no one can predict completely what the result of a general election will be, but preparation is key.

Charities can use this time as an opportunity to highlight their cause, (following the law) whilst thinking through and planning for any potential ramifications from each party outcome.

There’s a lot to think about!

Marketing Communications Directors will be looking at the potential policy shifts on the horizon, and be thinking about how they can align their charity’s messaging and advocacy efforts.

*As of 6/6/24 each party manifesto has not been published – typically they will be 3 weeks before polling day although there is not set date for release.

Most charity marketeers will be aware of useful resources available, but I thought it would be helpful just to remind, share links and summarise advice. ???

·??????? CharityComms | Inspiring Communications at the Heart of Charities – Membership organisation for charity communication professional – provides a wealth of resources including guides on communications in an election period.

·??????? A charity guide to marketing campaigns | Media Trust? - This guide offers top tips and best practises for forming marketing campaigns.

·??????? Communications & Marketing | Small Charities – this platform offers a variety of tools to small charities (it’s now closed but the site is still accessible).

Essentially the advice given to aid preparation can be broken down into 10 key points:

1. Understand each Party’s manifesto Stay informed about each party’s priorities and policies. Start looking at how these changes could impact your charity’s work and adjust your communication strategies accordingly.*

2. Engage with policy makers?Start identifying key figures to build relationships with in a potential new administration – what are their viewpoints, what’s your common ground?

3. Review your communications?Ensure your charity’s messaging resonates with the potential new government’s ethos. Highlight how your work contributes to the broader societal goals that a new administration champions.

4. Reinforce community relations?Strengthen ties with your supporters and the communities you serve. A united front can amplify your voice in advocating for favourable policies.

5. Plan for any financial changes Anticipate changes in funding or tax policies that could affect your charity. Prepare contingency plans to ensure financial stability.

6. Collaborate Join forces with other charities to share insights and resources. A collaborative approach can lead to more robust strategies in response to government changes.

8. Transparency?Maintain open communication with your donors and beneficiaries. Transparency builds trust and can help mitigate concerns during times of political transition.

9. Audience communication Use your platforms to inform the public about the implications of new policies on your charity’s work. Knowledge empowers people to support your cause.

10. Be agile and adaptable Be prepared to pivot your strategies as the political climate evolves. Agility will enable your charity to navigate uncertainties effectively.
