TPM -Total Productive Maintenance ? 8 TPM pillars of Total Productive Maintenance

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a comprehensive approach to equipment maintenance that aims to maximize the overall effectiveness and efficiency of production systems. TPM originated in Japan and is widely implemented in manufacturing industries worldwide. It focuses on involving all levels of the organization to improve equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and optimize production performance.

The eight TPM pillars form the foundation of the TPM philosophy and guide the implementation process.

These pillars are as follows:

  1. Autonomous Maintenance: This pillar emphasizes empowering operators to take responsibility for the routine care and maintenance of their equipment. Operators are trained to perform basic cleaning, inspection, and minor maintenance tasks to prevent equipment deterioration and breakdowns.
  2. Planned Maintenance: Planned Maintenance involves developing a systematic maintenance plan based on equipment condition, performance, and manufacturer recommendations. It includes periodic inspections, lubrication, and component replacements to ensure machines operate at peak performance and avoid unexpected failures.
  3. Quality Maintenance: Quality Maintenance focuses on preventing defects and errors by identifying and eliminating the root causes of equipment-related quality issues. It involves continuous monitoring, analysis, and improvement of equipment and processes to maintain high product quality standards.
  4. Training and Skill Development: This pillar emphasizes providing comprehensive training to operators, technicians, and maintenance personnel to enhance their knowledge, skills, and competencies related to equipment operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and problem-solving.
  5. Early Equipment Management: Early Equipment Management focuses on involving equipment designers and operators in the early stages of equipment procurement and installation. It aims to ensure that equipment is reliable, easy to maintain, and meets the required performance standards.
  6. Office TPM: Office TPM extends the TPM principles and practices to administrative and support functions within an organization. It aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of office processes, reduce waste, and streamline administrative workflows.
  7. Safety, Health, and Environment: This pillar emphasizes integrating safety, health, and environmental considerations into the maintenance practices. It focuses on creating a safe and healthy work environment, complying with regulatory requirements, and minimizing the environmental impact of equipment operations.
  8. TPM in Administration: TPM in Administration extends the principles of TPM to the administrative functions of an organization. It aims to eliminate waste, improve process efficiency, and enhance the overall effectiveness of administrative tasks such as planning, scheduling, and documentation.

By implementing the eight TPM pillars, organizations strive to create a culture of continuous improvement, proactive maintenance, and collaboration across all levels of the organization, leading to increased productivity, reduced costs, and improved overall equipment effectiveness.

Interesting. I’m always open to improvement. One quick observation is where does measurement occur in TPM? How do you ascertain trends for workload increases and quality improvements? Tracking workload volume and quality improvement trends is important to making evidence-based adjustments and is also congruent with Lean Six Sigma practice. Thank you for sharing!
