Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Disruptions to the metabolic system are often seen during toxic events as both causes and consequences of the toxicity. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional targeted metabolite analysis, toxicometabolomics has been widely adopted in toxicology research due to its comprehensive coverage for both xenobiotic and endogenous metabolites, as well as its capability to detect novel and subtle metabolic changes in complex biomatrices. This Special Issue will document, highlight, and discuss the progress and challenges in utilizing toxicometabolomics platforms for both general characterization and mechanistic insights in a wide range of biological research in toxicity. Because metabolism can play a role in every step of a toxic event, the scope of this Special Issue will include, but not be limited to, the following topics:

  • The metabolic activation and detoxification of toxic agents through metabolomic profiling and fingerprinting;
  • Toxicity-associated changes in endogenous metabolism in nutrients (amino acids, lipids, carbohydrate, etc.), cofactors (coenzymes, vitamins, etc.), oxidants and antioxidants (carbonyls, glutathione, etc.), and others;
  • Microbial metabolism in toxicity;
  • New toxicometabolomics techniques and methods for more efficient and accurate analysis;
  • The metabolic consequences of protective interventions in relation to toxicity.
