Workplace culture is the system of shared beliefs and behaviours that determine how an organization’s members interact and make decisions.
?If you have been part of an organisation where, you feel, the culture is nothing less than toxic, then this article is certainly meant for you. If you have never experienced a toxic work culture, thank your stars, and read this as it may help you prevent falling into or making bad culture at work.
?There is a negative correlation between toxic work culture and productivity. Places with bad working environments have poor productivity. Period. Many companies have learnt it the hard way that a healthy work culture is critical to retaining their employees and that a toxic one will drive them away, no matter how much the company pays them.
?Some tell-tale signs of a toxic work culture: -
?·????????Little or no enthusiasm in your department.
·????????A constant fear of letting-down your team.
·????????There is constant dysfunction and confusion.
·????????Never-ending gossip and drama.
·????????A high employee turnover.
?How to deal with a toxic work culture

?·????????Find your allies – building a support system of some friendly and like-minded colleagues can help you boost your spirits and feel less isolated.
?·????????Focus on what you can control - Stay focused on the decisions and reactions that you have a say in, and you will avoid expending energy and frustration on situations that aren’t worth your time.
?·????????Muster your courage and provide honest feedback - It’s possible that the leadership team doesn’t even realize the extent of the negativity that is spreading throughout the office, and you should take advantage of the chance to enlighten them about what could be going better.
?·????????Implement mindfulness techniques - Mindfulness in the workplace can help you focus on the present and be more intentional about engaging with the world. Start by doing a short, guided meditation or try some visualization exercises.
?·????????Take time to de-stress - After a long workday, it's important to find ways to unwind. Find activities that help you get your mind off work.
?·????????Establish healthy boundaries - If you find yourself in a toxic work culture, it's important to set healthy boundaries. Practice communicating your boundaries clearly to your manager and co-workers. If a boundary is crossed, address it immediately, so it doesn't happen again.
?·????????Start planning your exit strategy - If you have decided that the status quo is worse than the thought of change, it’s time to start looking for other job opportunities.
?Remember - Individuals who create toxic environments are insecure and unhappy with themselves. Thus, the reason for them projecting their unhappiness on others and manipulating situations is to gain cheap popularity. However, when you remain confident with your integrity and excellent performance intact, that toxic environment will begin to subside.
Note: The article is written in my personal capacity and as part of my doctoral research.

2 年Husein Sakerwala CISM?, CPP?, PCI?, PSP? great article as always, was a wonderful read. Just to add the biggest reason for toxicity to exist in an organisation is leadership not doing what it must which results in a disconnect with workforce. Right leadership makes a significant difference!

2 年Thought to add few lines to the good article by you .. "Workplace culture is the system of shared beliefs and behaviours that determine how an organization’s members interact and make decisions. (Nonetheless this same principle is applicable even inside a home which can be aptly named as “Residence culture”) If you have been part of an organisation where, you feel, the culture is nothing less than toxic, then, this article is certainly meant for you. If you have never experienced a toxic work culture, thank your stars, and read this as it may help you prevent falling into or making bad culture at work.(Please wait a while to assure yourself that you have not experienced a toxic residence culture and thank your stars again!) There is a negative correlation between toxic work culture and productivity.(True! You realize this the moment you taste your breakfast – in some cases even the bed coffee would disclose! ). Places with bad working (living) environments have poor productivity. Many companies (families) have learnt it the hard way that a healthy work (residence) culture is critical to retaining their employees (maintaining the relationships) and that a toxic one will drive (spoil) them away, no matter how much the company pays them (how much family values them) Some tell-tale signs of a toxic work culture (residence culture): - ? Little or no enthusiasm (life) in your department (home). ? A constant fear of letting-down your team.(family members) ? There are constant dysfunction and confusion. The system (life) becomes mechanical and monotonous ? Never-ending gossip and drama. Each member trying to find fault with management and dissolves into private mobile phone or own virtual world responding to anything and everything. By the time the wise becomes wiser and realizes the inevitable, most often than not, the system (life) would have crashed. ? A high employee turnover. How to deal with a toxic work culture ? Find your allies – building a support system of some friendly and like-minded colleagues can help you boost your spirits and feel less isolated. (This has become highly improbable with mounting false pride disintegrating friendships) ? Focus on what you can control - Stay focused on the decisions and reactions that you have a say in, and you will avoid expending energy and frustration on situations that aren’t worth your time. Yet realize that there are situations where you can keep your ego away and keep the system afresh to roll so that the company (family) can keep its ego of life, wisdom and energy and confidently smile at the world! ? Muster your courage and provide honest feedback - It’s possible that the leadership team (family man) doesn’t even realize the extent of the negativity that is spreading throughout the office (within the residence), and you should take advantage of the chance to enlighten them about what could be going better. ? Implement mindfulness techniques - Mindfulness in the workplace (residence) can help you focus on the present and be more intentional about engaging with the world. Start by doing a short, guided meditation (wherever possible even in groups) or try some visualization exercises. ? Take time to de-stress - After a long workday, it's important to find ways to unwind. Find activities that help you get your mind off work (or keep the minds afresh yet being within the circle/wall/residence) ? Establish healthy boundaries - If you find yourself in a toxic work (residence) culture, it's important to set healthy boundaries. Practice communicating your boundaries clearly to your manager and co-workers (family). If a boundary is crossed, address it immediately, so it doesn't happen again. ? Start planning your exit strategy - If you have decided that the status quo is worse than the thought of change, it’s time to start looking for other job opportunities (options). You know how hard it was for a core professional for you and how harder it could be for others. The moment you realize it, you start smiling which transcends, transcends and transcends.. Remember - Individuals who create toxic environments are insecure and unhappy with themselves. Thus, the reason for them projecting their unhappiness on others and manipulating situations is to gain cheap popularity (or attention). They forget that he management (family man) also has a life. Life is not always about profits. However, when you remain confident with your integrity and excellence intact, that toxic environment will begin to subside."
