Toxic Positivity: The Warning Signs
Not long ago, I shared a post emphasizing the importance of "never taking a day off" from working on ourselves...
I talked about the power of staying positive, even when times are tough because I truly believe that a positive mindset can help us overcome even the most daunting challenges.
Soon after posting, someone in the comments advised me to be careful with my positivity, suggesting it might be perceived as "Toxic Positivity," potentially making others feel invalidated if they’re struggling to find that same optimism.
This feedback made me pause.
Could being relentlessly positive be seen as a negative?
Could my intention to uplift somehow lead others to feel unseen or unheard?
REALITY CHECK:
I began to wonder—can positivity ever be too much of a good thing?
Could my encouragement be crossing a line into something potentially harmful?
But here's the thing: we all have a message that resonates with our core values, a brand that reflects who we are at our essence.
Diluting that message to appease everyone would only serve to weaken it.
For those who know me, organically, I’m a "Sunny Side Up" person. Encouraging others to be happy, grateful, resilient, and to persevere isn’t just something I do—it’s a core part of who I am.
DEFINITION:
The term "Toxic Positivity" was new to me, so I took the time to understand it.
By definition, it’s the overemphasis on positive thinking to the point that it can invalidate or dismiss genuine human emotions and struggles.
But as my mom used to say, "If the shoe doesn’t fit, don’t wear it!
So, I must respectfully decline the label of 'Toxic Positivity.' While it highlights a real concern, it doesn’t align with my mission to foster genuine positivity that makes the world a happier, better place
After all, my nickname is "Sunshine" for a reason!
But let me be clear: positivity doesn’t mean ignoring the real challenges we face. It’s about acknowledging them, facing them head-on, and choosing to see the possibilities that lie within them.
Let's take a closer look...
