Is township fiber popular?

Many people ask me whether there is demand for fiber in townships. Surely everyone already has 4G/5G or wireless?
I’ll use stats to answer the question.
We made the Kayamandi fiber network live in November 2022.?
At first, residents didn’t trust it. It seemed too good to be true.
R5 for 24hrs of uncapped internet @100mbls. Haibo! What’s the catch?
Turns out there is no catch. Within a few months, people realised fibertime?? was the real deal and here to stay.?
And that’s when user behaviour started changing.?
It’s a bit like the first time you put your foot in the sea. It’s a bit scary, but you don’t lose your foot.?
Then you go in knee-deep. Then waist-deep. Then you dive under the water. The next thing you know, you spend the whole day in the water, with no recollection of ever being afraid to dip in your toes.?
In October 2023, our average daily consumption per home was 1.5GB. Since then, it’s grown to 3.49GB per day.?
That’s 133% growth in less than a year.?
Why are people using more fibertime???
领英推荐
Firstly, they trust it more. Our major learning is that township residents are very cautious when buying data. They’re scared of bill shock. It takes a while before the customer realises that fibertime?? has no catch. We’re not stealing your money or your data.?
R5 gets you 24hrs at 100mbps. It’s a buffet. Eat as much as you like.?
Simple as that.?
Secondly, the more networks we build, the more utility fibertime?? vouchers have. This means people can use their fibertime?? at more places and for more time.?
Thirdly, and maybe most powerfully, the internet is an unknown thing for many people living in townships. When you’re constantly paranoid about using too much data, or your airtime disappearing, you don’t dive into the internet.?
You dip your toes and quickly take them out before your money is gone.
Fibertime?? lets township residents, for the very first time, wallow in the internet.?
24hrs uncapped fiber at 100mbps, that’s a lot of internet, that’s a lot of wallowing.?
Once customers start trusting the internet, they start exploring. That’s when they start finding YouTube and the like.?
Once a person has experienced the power and freedom of the internet, there’s no going back.?
Our customers are realising there is an almost infinitely deep and wide world of content and information at their fingertips, with no walls and no risk of bill shock.?
For R5 a day you can wallow in the internet to your heart’s content.?
133% growth in usage in less than a year.
Township fiber is popular.

The problem that we continue to see is that learners from the township areas cannot benefit from online livestreamed programmes because of the poor internet setup. Fibretime's solution is taking a portion of the digital divide's "market share". I would love to see a school been adopted as a pilot to setup satellite bases for learners to attend during our online sessions.

If you weigh up the cost of DSTV against Android TV there is no comparison. The DSTV decoder is many times more expensive and DSTV subscription is also many times more expensive. But Fibre is not available in the townships

ISPs in the past had an incentive to ensure you had good internet at the end of the month to ensure you pay your debit order. Breakage throughout the month was tolerated because either way you got paid for the entire month. With true pay-go the incentives are aligned. The ISP/FNO is incentivise to give the customer the fastest internet 24/7/365 because revenue maps onto usage. So the better service you give the better your returns will be.
