It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and is celebrated by people all around the world.?The primary goal of World Environment Day is to promote environmental conservation and sustainable practices. Each year, the day is centered around a specific theme chosen by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to focus attention on pressing environmental issues.

The Government's Role -
The Indian government recognizes the urgency of the plastic pollution problem and has taken commendable steps towards its mitigation. Here are some notable actions taken by the Indian government:
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign): Launched in 2014, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a national cleanliness campaign that aims to make India open defecation-free, improve waste management, and promote sanitation and hygiene.
