Toward A Feminist & Inclusive Foreign and Security Policy

Toward A Feminist & Inclusive Foreign and Security Policy

In lieu of an introductory article, we present to you three short video interviews on what a feminist and inclusive foreign & security policy actually means for Europe. Last week, FNF EU successfully concluded a conference on Gender x Geopolitics, and we have asked 3 of our speakers Shada Islam , Rick Zedník Zednik and Theresa Caroline Winter to elaborate further on this topic. When thinking of gender and geopolitics, the term #feministforeignpolicy (FFP) might sound more familiar to you, but it doesn’t come with its own critiques, and it is questionable whether having female policymakers translates to an actual feminist geopolitical agenda.?

Interview 1

We asked Shada Islam, Founder, New Horizons Project | Editor, EUobserver , the following questions:

  • What is feminist foreign policy?

  • What does an inclusive security policy mean for Europe?

  • Strong or soft power for Europe?

Interview 2

Rick Zednik, Advisor & Secretary of the Women Political Leaders (WPL) Board, answers our questions to the following:

  • What are the biggest challenges for women wanting to get into politics?

  • Why is equal representation so important?

  • Why is it important to have more women in political leadership positions?

Interview 3

Theresa Winter, Security & Defence Manager at Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit gives her opinion on the concept of feminist foreign policy.

  • What is feminist foreign policy?

  • Why should we use the term feminist foreign policy?

  • Should countries focus their efforts on gender-just policy?

  • Why should the EU adopt a more gender-just foreign policy?

Question to the Reader

Bridging the Trench: A Liberal Take on Gender-Just Feminist By Jana Sproul and Jeroen Dobber

The inclusion and advancement of women lead to more prosperous societies and more sustainable peace. Despite these empirical findings, women are grossly underrepresented in politics. Nevertheless, the debate on gender-responsive foreign policy has gained international prominence in recent years, bringing the discussion on the protection and advancement of women in security contexts to the centre of many national discourses. Where are we now in 2022 and what role can liberals play in the future development of this concept?
