Tourism Society Careers Pathway

This week the Tourism Society had another interesting virtual roundtable Think Tank with its members. Building on the previous Think Tank discussion, concerning the global skills drain the tourism industry is experiencing, the group considered how to reinvigorate an interest in the industry as a future career.

It was unanimously agreed that tourism can play a role in everyone's career, from social media experts to lawyers, accountants, managers, electricians, receptionists, customer services and IT departments etc. Our members discussed how we can develop this conversation further and map out career pathways within the industry that include transferrable skills from other industries, and also provide people with transferrable skills that they can take elsewhere.

The resounding sentiment from the group was that everyone they know in the tourism industry is passionate about their industry – what can be better than working in tourism that incorporates the travel, hospitality, and leisure activities we all enjoy!

This week had a specific university interest, with tourism course leaders from Swansea University and UCLan in attendance. The conversation focused on how a future in tourism is for everyone, which fits in well with the appointment of our new board member, Dr Peter Robinson, from the Association for Tourism in Higher Education (ATHE). The group talked about how tourism courses encompass a vast array of business and management skills that can be applied not only to a career in tourism, but also within all business sectors.

What aspect of the industry are you in? Pop your sector in the chat-box so that we can add it to our careers map!

If you would like to join the conversation next week, come into the Tourism Society Virtual Office from 12 - 1 pm next Wednesday, 19 January. Enter our office here, no password required.

Thanks for this, and sorry I couldn't make it this week - I think we know the key issue is, how do we both communicate, and deliver, the employee experience that will ensure our industry grows stronger and better over the next few years?
