Tough Conversations? Let me make them easier!

Tough conversations in the workplace? Let me make them easier for you! Let me share with you the one thing you can do to give your feedback credibility and structure.

Feedback often falls within 2 categories:

  1. Performance metrics not being met or
  2. Misaligned cultural behaviour

Number 1 conversations are usually easier, particularly if the team member is culturally aligned and engaged. They are open to feedback and coachable. They want to do their best work for you. You also usually have tangible evidence of underperformance that you can point to.

In my experience most tough conversations fall within category 2 – when your team member is acting in a way that is misaligned with your organisational culture. These conversations are particularly difficult when the team member is meeting or exceeding their performance targets. Often these people are closed off to any negative feedback and think they’re untouchable.

Hmmm…..so what can you do about this?

Create a CULTURAL BLUEPRINT for your organisation.

What does this look like?

  • Define a set of values (3-5 priorities in your company – things that give meaning and motivation)
  • For each value define: what we think (beliefs), what we do (behaviours) and what we say (language) ‘around here’ because of that value
  • Layer with stories (legends) for each value – bring them to life with examples
  • Embed these cultural expectations in your coaching and performance management processes – talk about them, coach by them, measure your people by them

A cultural blueprint clearly sets up behaviour expectations and makes conversations easier. When a team member does or says something that is misaligned with the cultural blueprint, you can articulate it clearly (just like you can with performance metrics).

Being the leader sometimes means having to give tough feedback. Not fun! But you can put steps into place to make it as easy as you can on yourself and the person you're giving the feedback to.

A cultural blueprint will allow you to lead with transparency and set clear expectations, building trust and connection in your team!
