TOUCHING THE FACE OF GOD
This is a real-life personal account of a climb to the top of the Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland (14,692 ft.), a trek to the base camp of Mount Everest (18,500 ft.) and to the summit of Mount Yushan in Taiwan, the highest mountain in Northeast Asia (12,965 ft.). It includes brief historical accounts of legendary mountain ascents into high landscapes, how the mystery of the world’s highest places has come to grip the adventurer's imagination, and every year attracts hundreds of climbers up the most perilous slopes.
Three centuries ago, mountains were feared as the forbidding abodes of dragons and other mysterious beasts. In the mid-1700s the attention to both science and poetry sparked a passion for adventure in the mountains. Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Lord Byron, in particular, extolled the sublime experiences of being high in the mountains, and the death of George Mallory in 1924 on Mt Everest caught the attention of the world.
Later, in 1953, Edmund Hillary, a New Zealander, and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first to conquer Mount Everest. That began the rush to the summit. Any mountaineer will experience the fear, risk, and beauty of the ice and snow at high altitudes. The preparation and contemplation of the climb always create a strange alternative reality and allure of high altitude. It is a feeling of being alive like none other. The closeness to Nature and the environment is like touching the face of God.
