If you’ve been in business management at any level you’ve probably struggled with holistically engaging employees. There are no short cuts, it’s an obligation from top management on down to move employees from just doing their jobs to a sense of ownership in the business. Employees want to feel they can make a difference. They want a purpose, to participate in the vision and mission of the company.
It is difficult, but if you want something difficult to work make it as simple as possible and easy to remember. T.O.U.C.H is something I’ve used, and with management discipline, does work.
Transparent: Financial numbers, metrics, goals, plans, strategy, vision, and mission, are shown and talked about regularly—to the extent possible.
Outside: Get out of your office daily. Talk to as many people in and out of your department as you can—find the time!
Us: There are no departmental boundaries, no gatekeepers, and no silos. It’s one Team and individual success depends on collective success.
Communication: is never as good as you think it is. More is better—more-than-more is better.
Help: None of us is as smart as all of us.
Reach out and T.O.U.C.H. someone today!

9 年Ken, I tried to share my enthusiasm through one of the links above, but since I can't see the results, I'll comment here. TOUCH...great insight and worth remembering! It's easy to get wrapped up in our individual and departmental objectives and goals --> but we must never forget that without TEAM engagement, our success - and that of our company - will be limited. More importantly, your insights are not just WORDS. Having worked for you (and with you) for years, I can testify that you put TOUCH into practice on a DAILY basis, in real time, each and every day!

9 年NICE ACRONYM!! THERE IS NO I IN TEAM.
Good post, Ken.... I would also add: it is all about leading with common sense... when leaders don't lead with common sense, most employees don't follow....applying this practice however helps both parties involved.... my current CEO is the most common sense I have had during my career... "you work hard you get whatever you want, you are lazy, and you're gone soon".... :)
