Toubani Resources: Mining deals revive Mali’s gold sector

Several mining heavyweights have reached deals with the Mali Government, another indicator that the West African country is keen to nurture its mining sector and overcome the hurdles faced in recent times.

Barrick Gold (TSX:ABX) just last week announced it and the government had agreed to find a resolution to the existing claims and disputes between the government and the gold giant’s Loulo and Gounkoto mining companies.

Details of the agreement are yet to be finalised, however Barrick CEO Mark Bristow says the company’s mutually beneficial relationship with Malian governments has endured for 30 years and “occasional differences with successive regimes had always been amicably resolved”.

Copper, gold interest spikes ahead of Noosa Mining

The second Noosa Mining conference for the year is attracting the copper and gold explorers as rising prices generate increased interest from investors.

Of the line-up of 50 confirmed companies so far, around half are either primarily focused on gold or copper or the metals are among the commodities in their portfolio.

Brisbane-based organisers Equity Events expects more companies to be added to the program as the conference, which runs from 13-15 November, gets closer.?

Scorpio Gold doubles foothold in Manhattan district

Canadian explorer Scorpio Gold (TSX-V:SGN) has expanded its landholding in the Manhattan Gold District in Nevada, US.

The explorer has staked a further 2,716 hectares, more than doubling its total ground position to about 4,779 hectares and further consolidating its position in the district.

Shares on the TSX Venture Exchange rose 15.6% to C$0.185 ($0.21) following the news.?

Terra Uranium, ATHA sign Canadian projects deal

Terra Uranium (ASX:T92) has signed definitive option agreements with ATHA Energy Corp (TSX-V:SASK), that will give both companies the option to acquire a percentage of each other’s projects in Canada .

By entering into these agreements, Terra Uranium says it will increase its footprint in the “highly prospective” Athabasca Basin by more than 60,000 hectares.

Under the agreements , Terra Uranium has an exclusive right and option to acquire up to 70% of ATHA Energy’s Spire and Horizon projects by incurring a minimum C$4.75 million ($5.12 million) in statutory exploration expenditure.?

Ragnar moves to unlock true scale of Orrvik

Ragnar Metals (ASX:RAG) is readying to drill test its high-priority Orrvik Lithium Project in Sweden after channel sampling exposed a wide outcropping spodumene-bearing pegmatite.?

Channel sampling revealed an outcropping spodumene-bearing pegmatite extending for 11.55m @ 1.45% lithium, 74 parts per million (ppm) tantalum and 0.03% tin from surface and open to the south.

Included in this interval is a “high-grade” zone of 3m @ 3.11% lithium, 48ppm tantalum and 0.04% tin.?

Astute enters new drilling phase at Red Mountain

Astute Metals (ASX:ASE) expects to complete maiden diamond drilling at the Red Mountain Lithium Project in Nevada, US next month with assays anticipated to be returned by January 2025.?

The two-hole, 400m drilling program is designed to extend the mineralisation 375m north of the current northernmost drill intersection of clay-hosted lithium mineralisation, and to test for a new horizon south of Red Mountain.?

This drilling campaign will assist the $14.84 million market capitalisation company’s geological interpretation of the Red Mountain Project, which will allow for the design and permitting of drill sites for drilling in the next field season (Q2-Q4 2025).

GTI Energy enters final Lo Herma drill phase

GTI Energy (ASX:GTR) has entered the final phase of its 2024 campaign to drill and construct three hydrogeologic and water monitoring wells at its flagship Lo Herma ISR Uranium Project in the US.

Following completion of the work, the uranium hopeful will be in a position by year-end to update the mineral resource estimate (MRE) and exploration target for the project, located in Converse County, Powder River Basin, Wyoming.

A decision will then be made on starting a Scoping Study to demonstrate the economic potential of the project.

Rio Tinto to acquire Arcadium in all-cash deal

A definitive agreement has been reached under which Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) will acquire Arcadium Lithium (NYSE:ALTM) in an all-cash transaction for US$5.85 per share.

The transaction will be implemented by way of a Jersey scheme of arrangement and is expected to close in mid-2025.

Both the Rio Tinto and Arcadium Lithium boards have unanimously approved the deal.

Inflection’s drilling, valuation bodes well for Kincora

Canadian copper explorer Inflection Resources (CSE:AUCU) has reported the best hole so far at its flagship Duck Creek Project, with the latest find right near the licence boundary of Kincora Copper ’s (ASX:KCC) Nyngan Project in New South Wales .

Inflection revealed late last week that drillhole DCKDH020 intersected encouraging hydrothermal alteration and sulphide mineralisation, including the most intense alteration of all holes completed across its entire New South Wales portfolio, which covers over 7000km2.

Following Inflection’s news, the company’s shares rallied 27%, pushing the junior explorer’s market capitalisation to C$19 million ($20.6 million). Shares added a further 10.5% on Friday (4 October), boosting the company’s market capitalisation to C$20 million.

A forgotten metal? Zinc again

It’s often a forgotten metal despite playing an essential role in literally thousands of products. After large falls in 2023, zinc demand is again continuing to strengthen with Australia’s refined output expected to increase in the coming years before easing in 2026.

The Department of Industry, Science and Resources’ (DISR ) latest issue of its Resources and Energy Quarterly: September 2024 notes price movements will drive Australia’s zinc exports to rise from $3.8 billion in 2023–24 to $3.9 billion in 2024–25 but ease to $3.7 billion in 2025–26.?

DISR forecasts the zinc price to steady over the outlook period to 2026, increasing from about US$2,720 ($3,972) a tonne in 2024 to US$2,770/t in 2025, before slipping back to about US$2,710/t in 2026.??

Are lengthy permitting processes killing Australian mining?

Late last year, in an effort to boost the development of new mining projects, the Western Australian Government announced its intention to conduct a sweeping overhaul of its environmental permitting system.

Under the reforms, the state environment minister would be able to fast-track decisions on projects of ‘state significance’, while government approvals could run simultaneous to environmental permitting, rather than afterwards.

“Today’s announcement is a massive step forward to remove the green tape that has been holding back our industry and the state economy for years,” the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) CEO Warren Pearce said at the time.
