The Tortoise and The Hare...
Slow and steady does it...
When we first start out to reach our goals, dreams or new projects they can excite us, and give us the drive and energy we need to succeed.
What happens when that energy runs out?
Is your project about you.
Does it say anything about you whether you succeed or not?
Or is the project about the end goal of bring it to life for its own sake?
Is it about you...
In the story about the Tortoise and the Hare, the Hare boasts that he can run rings around the Tortoise and still win the race.
For the Hare winning the race is all about him as personally, to lose the race would say something about him, it would diminish him in some way. To win would just bolster his inflated ego even more.
The Tortoise however is not concerned about what winning or losing says about him personally, it is just about doing what it takes to complete the race. If wins that's a bonus.
Persistance pays...
As the story unfolds the Hare is so sure of winning because he is so fast, and so far in the lead, that he stops and has a nap. Complacent that he will win, he takes his eye off the ball and falls asleep.
The Tortoise sees the Hare speed off, but just keeps plodding along, no matter what thoughts go through his mind, he just keeps on moving. Eventually he catches and passes the hare.
As the Tortoise is almost at the winning line the Hare wakes up. Seeing the Tortoise nearly crossing the line he runs as fast as he can, but alas he can't catch up in time before the Tortoise wins.
The moral of the story...
The Hare lost the race because he was running the race to make himself look good.
Winning or losing said something about him personally.
The Tortoise wasn't concerned about how the outcome of the race made him look, win or lose it was all the same to him.
He just kept plodding along, and the only goal he had was to cross the finish line.
What about you...
Are your projects about you?
If you don't succeed what does it say about you?
Are you trying to prove how good you are?
If you hit a roadblock do you take it personally, and does it affect the effort you put in to your project.
When progress is slow do you feel like giving up sometimes?
Or could you be like the Tortoise?
Could you just keep plodding on, no matter how it made you feel or think about yourself?
Slow and steady wins the race - or goal, or dream or project.
