The Torch that lights the dark
In times when all things seem dark and gloomy, lost through the helplessness of despair – a beacon can be found on the hill shining a light in the darkest of places.
Guiding us through the treachery of what may lie ahead, it navigates us through despair and anguish, fear and – where hope may appear to have abandoned us, the truth is, hope exists within the ray of light that acts as our torch.
For Victorians, COVID has shattered the lives of many, destroyed the flagship of the Australian economy, increased the rate of mental health, stress, suicide and domestic violence – it has seared in our minds what a silent enemy has done to our lives.
If we are to recover – we need to grow from the devastation that has tested us, then all we have to do is look to the struggles that our grandparents had endured amid the Second World War.
COVID is no different – the challenges maybe different but the struggles remain constant. During WWII, we knew the enemy we were to fight – we could see and hear them, touch and contain them, but we had to fight long and hard to overcome them and we did!
Our ancestors, may have thought war may never come to an end – because no end seemed to be in sight. But they persevered. They struggled and they worked and supported each other. Communities came together to work as one, to endure the struggles as one and fight an enemy in a way that would not beat them.
COVID may be a slightly different war because the enemy is invisible and silent but it is here.
Continuing on the legacy of our ancestors, they understood to lose to tyranny would mean losing our freedom and independence to fascism. That could never happen. Which is why drawing from the hardships of our ancestors is the beacon of light that shines for us, because they endured hardship and survived. They thrived and flourished and Australia benefitted greatly from it.
As a nation we grew, we united and we prospered. That will happen again. Australia will rally and we will become bigger and better than ever.
The future is ours, just as it was then for our grandparents, they endured the rationing, the deaths in battle and the absence of their families. And yet they rose.
That is what we all will do, as a nation we will rise together, overcome COVID and rebuild an Australia bigger and better – because that is where our opportunity lies where our hope shines and where our prosperity resides. As gloomy as it may appear now, history has taught that we will rise to grow again.
