Humble brag: I am a dad joke expert. Give me a topic, I have a dad joke. My social media is dedicated to dad jokes. I have years and years of dad joke content... and I'm not even a dad. I guess you could say I'm a faux pa. ;)

A dad joke, delivered correctly, can:

• Set a situation at ease
• Encourage comradery
• Raise comfort levels

That groan, eye roll, shake of the head, crooked defiant grin - that's gold.

Now - let's talk ChatGPT.

I'll be honest. I tried ChatGPT a few months back - for this very purpose - to find novel dad jokes. I wanted to find content I hadn't heard before.

Did it work? No. Here's why...

I asked ChatGPT to tell me some dad jokes. To my disappointment I was presented things like:

How do you make a Kleenex dance? Put a little boogie in it.

Why did the tomato blush? It saw the salad dressing.

These are dad jokes you find through a quick Google search! They're not curated. They're not novel. They're just... well... subpar.

So - I decided ChatGPT couldn't add to my dad joke repertoire.

Then, my friend Stephen Carr asked me the question: did you know ChatGPT is an endless source of novel dad jokes???

I told him about my experience. He chuckled (at least I think he did over LI messenger) and helped me correct the way I was conversing with ChatGPT. Within seconds he sent me dad jokes I had never heard before.

SC wisdom: Give ChatGPT more to work with.

I started to ask ChatGPT to "tell me a joke about Fredericton, or about Melissa, or about other things".

BOOM! New and novel dad jokes. Thanks ChatGPT (and Stephen!).

There's a lesson in all this. Maybe a couple.

1. ChatGPT will give you information based on what you ask. The more detail, the better the result.
2. Read dad jokes in my voice and you'll enjoy them more. Don't forget the finger gun finish.
3. Don't give up. Find those new novel dad jokes. Go for the groan.
