#Top10 facts behind Mumbai Floods that you don't know.

This is how the city looks which has:

Mumbai accounts for slightly more than 6.16% of India's economy contributing

10% of factory employment,

30% of income tax collections,

60% of customs duty collections,

20% of central excise tax collections,

40% of foreign trade and rupees 40,000 crore (US$10 billion) in corporate taxes to the Indian economy.

Why is flooding is the basic issue still an issue year after year?

Are the Mumbai-kars habituated or are afraid to raise their voices? How can we take an Initiative to send a proposal to the Municipal along with a open letter? What is the solution or there is no solution? Let me explain...

1. The most important thing citizens/ #Mumbaikars forget is to read the law. Legally, you can not file a complaint against BMC for not fixing the road. It is an service that they are offering which does not make them responsible. The onus of maintaining the road largely also depends on its citizen like you and me.

2. The urban poor, the poor, and lower economy class adds a huge amount of wet and dry waste everyday. (I have been to Denor dumping grounds for 6 straights days to see the ground reality). This waste amounts to water clogging. The major reason.

3. Mumbai’s drainage system needs adequate repairs and there is a huge shortage of people who are willing to go down in the drains for maintenance. I have been told some of these drains are big enough to fit a BEST bus inside. I must suggest to have a reality check about these drainage pipes. You can see pictures about them in Sudhark Olwe’s work.

4. Mumbai city was a group of islands which were reclaimed over period of time by adding concrete cement. That means no place for water to move down in the ground. Water will move out only via gutters via mithi river after processing

5. Mithi river is clogged due to wet waste.

6. There is also a huge deficit in water treating facility in Mumbai. We don’t have adequate number. There were recent talks about buying a new machine/ setting up a water treatment plant however cost was way to high and is still on the table. Hence you can not just let out the clogged water into the sea without treating.

7. The sher number of our population kills the entire process by not following it. We are talking around 2 million citizens vs few thousands BMC/ government employees.

8. We are not a preventative nation. We are a reactivate nation. We start planning a for a solution when the problem is at the door. A classic example is Mumbai Metro. A project which should have been a reality 10 years ago took way too long for clearing all the road blocks.

9. Every year the government has 365 days to prepare for the next monsoon. But, what about those 1.5 million citizen who haven’t changed their habits.

10. I disagree with the point that government is to be blamed for this. We as citizen are to be blamed as well. If not more, than equally. If citizens can not respect the infrastructure, how much can the government do? I seen live examples of how people have vandalised new infrastructure project. (Not using over head brigade and still crossing via highways, shattered glasses of Tejas express within 24 hours of its launch. Mumbai example - people throwing wrappers, chewing gum on mumbai station escalators resulting to stopping for frequent repairs.
