Top Voice

Top Voice

There is an irony to being named a “Top Voice” when you’re known for being stoic, soft spoken, and understated. As an introvert and someone not altogether comfortable talking about himself, written words have always come easier than spoken ones (I’m generally terrible at structured interviews). My approach is more of a slow burn – actions over words, leadership by example. It takes more time but leads to more meaningful relationships and lasting success.

Never let someone else think for you.

To be honest, I don’t care much for the term “influencer.” In the internet age, we are already too susceptible to the influence of others. Half-truths, hidden agendas, and distorted viewpoints shape too much of our daily lives. I suppose the term “thought-provoker” doesn’t roll off the tongue, but the true potential of social media is to inspire others to think critically. We should be compelled to step outside of preconceived notions. To see problems from a different perspective.

Don't rest on your laurels, stand on them.

Why would a community Orthopedic Surgeon devote so much time and attention to a platform like LinkedIn? For one, LinkedIn has helped me find a voice and has given me the vehicle to express it. I am grateful for the connections I’ve made and the interactions I’ve had. LinkedIn has allowed me to expand my interests in digital health and healthcare delivery in ways that would not happen otherwise. It has led to some great conversations and incredible opportunities.

In this day and age, there are many avenues to express an opinion. It’s somewhat of a national pastime. As the saying goes, opinions are like…well, you know. Opinions have their place, but it is our actions that really matter. Like many overachievers, I am driven by the notion of constant growth and higher purpose. These concepts both fuel and consume me.

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

But how do you prove you’re driven? How do you demonstrate your potential? I’m not ex-McKinsey nor did I intern at Google. I don’t have a PhD from Stanford or an MBA from Harvard Business School. When it comes to evolving my career, I have mostly bootstrapped my way along. But I know my capabilities, where I’ve been and where I want to go. In sharing my thoughts and ideas here, I hope I have (in some small way) provided a glimpse of my passion and what drives me. By leveraging LinkedIn, I continue to pursue my higher purpose -- to get my foot in the door, then kick it wide open. I'm confident my journey has only just begun.

Opportunity knocks, this is my door.

Many thanks to the LinkedIn editors for thinking enough of my posts and articles to name me a Top Voice. Special thanks to those who have taken the time to read what I’ve written, reach out, comment, and connect.  More to come.
