Top trends on LinkedIn: Millennial homes, Southwest issues, cheering bosses. Plus: Tips for getting started

I’ve talked a lot about the “platform of generosity” concept — that success happens through sharing ideas, insights, support, or more. One of the ways I see that happening is members helping other members get comfortable with starting to post.?

That's because, for so many, getting to the starting line is the hardest part of the race. One of the most common question I get is: I want to share, but what should I say? My usual answer is that the best way to find out is to experiment and see what resonates — or get inspiration from posts that you've liked. And if I were to put on my Dr. Sharon hat (bike helmet?) I’d ask, “What would happen if you published something that didn't do well? What are you afraid of?”

But I’m just one voice in the mix. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite tips from members and I’d love for you to leave your ideas in the comments.?

  1. Leave comments: Comments are a great way to get started building your voice. You can test out language, see what generates responses, and start building an audience so that you know when you talk there will be others there to cheer you on.
  2. Amplify others. Steven Wolfe Pereira is a great example of? someone who does this with his Spotlight Series highlighting Black and Latinx talent.?
  3. Share jobs or resources you see or something you can offer. Example: DoorDash's Head of Marketing Kofi Amoo-Gottfried and TikTok's Head of Marketing Nick Tran are always in my feed sharing jobs they or others are hiring for.
  4. Bring people together. Westbrook's SVP of Marketing & Entertainment Jabari Hearn and Houston Rockets' Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Julian Duncan have an amazing LinkedIn Group, Monday Night Mentorship, that's a network for marketers of color to share experiences, answer questions and find community. (Thanks to Creator Programs Lead Callie Schweitzer for No. 3 and 4)
  5. Take advantage of tips and guides to help you not feel like you’re standing on a ledge.?We have lots of great resources to get fresh ideas, like this Quarterly Content Calendar created by the LinkedIn for Creators page or product head Tomer Cohen’s “Building LinkedIn” newsletter (subscribe here.) And if audio and video are your preferred mediums, LinkedIn News Production Manager Dave Pond just posted a fantastic video with details on how to improve the quality of your audio.

Each week, I’ll highlight creators who are initiating meaningful conversations on LinkedIn. These members use a variety of tools — from live video to polls — to nurture their audience. See if any of their actions work for you or engage with them directly by leaving a comment and sharing your insights.

  2. On #WorldMentalHealthDay, Chief Social Strategist Nils Smith shared a personal story on how his depression affected his life and how he’s learned to prioritize his mental health.
  3. Data Science Top Voice Greg Coquillo highlights the importance of building strong probability and statistics foundations for those interested in breaking into the machine learning and AI industries in his latest post.?
  4. Every Tuesday, financial planner Treyton DeVore shares a 2-minute video updating members on what’s happening in finance. This week, he dives into the debt ceiling.?
