Top Trends for 2022

10 days into January 2022 and we are already overwhelmed!

I have had multiple conversations with global business leaders about the key trends for 2022. How will work evolve? How will leadership evolve? What will organizations need to focus on?

Here is my take on the leadership, business, technology, and life in year 2022. For those who prefer an audio version, I recorded a podcast on these trends for you here .

  • Technology will evolve to be more human: Just building technology products and services will not be enough. How ethical are the products and solutions that you are building? How biases, security and privacy, and sustainability concerns are addressed in building and deploying the products? Organizations and consumers will be hesitant to use technology that helps them but is not “human”.
  • Supply chain strategies will now focus on resiliency: Efficiency and resilience are opposing forces in our economy. As businesses focused on efficiency, they forgot about resiliency. In last decade or so, businesses had focused on being efficient. Being efficient meant that duplication and redundancy were removed from the supply chain. From the shortage of test kits to shortage of toilet paper, we all saw the breakdown of supply chain in last 2 years. So in year 2022, we will see supply chain strategies that focus on striking a balance between efficiency and redundancy. Businesses have already started reviewing their asset strategy, geographical footprint, and have started diversifying raw material acquisition, manufacturing and shipping. Data integrity and data quality will play a key role in the new supply chain strategies with help from cloud computing, automation and AI-driven solutions.
  • DEI initiatives will no longer be optional: People want to work for an organization that values them as an individual- An organization that encourages its people to bring their whole self to work; an organization that recognizes that its people are its most powerful asset – they are multi-faceted, play a pivotal role in society beyond their work, and their varied experiences help them innovate at work. The great resignation is actually the great reevaluation and people are REJECTING the companies who fail to recognize and value them as individuals. So, in year 2022, we will see DEI initiatives emerge from the shadows of HR and become a key CEO initiative. We will see a shift in org structures because of this – More Chief Diversity Officers will now report directly into CEOs rather than reporting into CHROs. Nickoria Johnson, Chief Diversity Officer at Credera will share her insights at the eWOW 2022 Virtual Summit Keynote. Here is the link to register .
  • Continuous learning will be mandatory: The pace at which today’s technology and business landscape is evolving, it is impossible to be an expert in a domain. We all as individuals need to make continuous learning a habit, a part of our DNA. Organizations need to build, encourage, and support a culture of learning that is embedded in the flow of work to build the leaders that they need to drive the business initiatives successfully. Coaching will play a critical role in building effective leaders. I will be talking about actionable steps to build Transformational Leadership programs at PeopleMatters keynote later in Jan. Link to attend or connect with me for a conversation.
  • Work-life balance will no longer be a thing: When we use the phrase “work-life balance”, we put work at the same pedestal as life. In last 2 years, if we have learned anything it is that work is NOT equal to life. So this year, out with the phrase “Work-life balance”. People will seek career opportunities that allow them flexibility to be creative and allow for a life that they desire. People will refuse to hang on to jobs that lead to burn out and we will see the rise of gig economy. Organizations will need to look at talent, performance, and work with a completely different lens to appeal to this new, enlightened employee base. B2C solutions will see substantial growth.

Do these trends resonate with you? What else would you add to this list? Please let me know in the comments.

In my next newsletter, I will provide tips on how to make the most of these trends. Make sure to subscribe so that you don’t miss out on next month’s newsletter.

Yes, agree, "work life balance" is an out dated construct and suddenly, thankfully, a clearly incongruent term. Hmmm, sounds like the word "life" in the context of (not equal to) work needs a new word.

Rashim Mogha One thing which I have felt is that there should be scope or opportunity provided by the organisations where an individual can pursue another set of work like teaching or doing gig in a different profile at least 10% of there work time.

I agree… very well said and I love your dialog about DE&I!! Mic drop on what you said! This is very nuanced, but leaders need to learn how to be even better listeners. We need to pay closer attention to how our employees are REALLy doing and create the time, opportunity, and safe space/relationship for those authentic conversations. We also need to better listen to our clients/customers and listen more to what the data is saying. Might not make the cut for your article, but if leaders continue to struggle with listening, their chances of success are diminished greatly!
