Happy new year! 2021 is finally here and we can say goodbye to 2020, the year that everyone wants to forget!
If there’s one thing that 2020 did teach us, it’s that online search is still big business, and, as more businesses move online or at least diversify their businesses to be available online, the competition is just going to get bigger and bigger.
Beating the Competition at SEO
Everyone wants to know how to rank number 1 on Google, especially now when the competition is so fierce, but the sad fact is that it takes a lot of work and patience to build SEO strategies that really work in the long-term.
There are a few Google page ranking factors and tips that we can share with you today that will help your website climb the page ranks. The number one thing to remember, through all of the tips, is your user’s intent. Google is really focusing in on this now, giving the user exactly what they want in the fastest and smoothest way possible.
This means that your attention needs to switch from “what I want to say” to “what the user what’s to know”.
Write Helpful Content
The keyword here is ‘helpful’, not long for the sake of being long, and not thin, weak content with the same information that everyone else is sending out.
If you want your content to rank higher, you need to consider what your user wants to get out of visiting your website (there’s that user intent again) rather than just what you’d like them to do.
You may be wondering how exactly this applies to you if you are a commerce website, for example, but well-written blog content can turn the traffic of a commerce web page around, especially if it is well researched and original.
Go For Lower Search Volume
This tip is a double-edged sword, but if you get it right, you could be picking up the Google SEO traffic that other sites just don’t reach.
The key is to go for search terms with a lower value than high competition search terms, but still with enough search results volume that you are getting whatever traffic there is. For example, if you run a pet website, you could guarantee that “how long do cats live” is a very competitive search term, but a search term such as “how long do Russian Blue cats live?” will be much lower.
The bonus to writing for lower search engine volumes is that if your site does well and improves your authority whilst building relationships with your user base, you can go after bigger competition search terms with authority behind you!
Outwrite The Competition
This is not about blog length, but it is also about blog post length. Let’s explain.
To really expand on a topic in your blog posts or guest posts. You need room to think and room to explore. It’s incredibly difficult to write a helpful piece of content in only a few hundred words that is really in-depth. If you’re trying to beat your competition and gain a slice of their referral traffic, you’ll need to ensure your content is better and more well researched.
If they have a 500-word article that introduces the topic, you write a 1000 word article that introduces it and expands it!
That’s not to say you should fill your articles with fluff. Friedrich Nietzsche said, “It is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a whole book”. Be concise in your writing, keep on topic, but don’t be afraid to really explore the topic.
Build Your Links Profile
The last of our tips appear on every list about improving your Google SEO rankings, and that is getting a natural link to your site and building from this. It appears on every list because it WORKS!
Understanding how things like anchor text, guest blogging, and high-quality links influence a good link building strategy will mean your website has referring domains that help Google to see that you are an authority on your topic. You’ll build your trustworthiness and show off your expertise. All the ingredients needed to tackle Google’s EAT algorithm!
As an added bonus to this tip, don’t forget to include broken link building in your link building tactics strategy!
Summing Up
Ranking on Google is tricky.
In some ways, it’s getting harder due to the sheer amount of competition for practically every topic online, but if you are clever about understanding what Google wants from you, you’ll be able to build your website in a way that satisfies Google and satisfies your users.

3 年Great article - two things about what you're writing: 1. This is true when you're talking about pet (as an example) in some spaces (like gambling for example) even finding these kws is close to impossible ( can be done though, but will have to affect the whole way you target the content on your site) 2. You're talking about EAT, and It's all good, But (you mentioned it and I want to further emphasize it) Without good links, all the idea behind EAT can't really be done Again thank you - in the middle of thinking about strategy and you helped me decide which path should I go

3 年Excellent article and well explained. The biggest take is that it takes a lot of effort, first to find what to write for, and then to write well enough to meet the requirements of Google and the end user. The other issue is that you have to write lots of these articles as each one only targets a small number of search phrases. Yes they are all low competition, but that is because they are not that well used. True even the odd one can bring in traffic and links, which will help with the sites overall performance, but if you want a lot of traffic on say cats, you will have to write a lot of blogs and many web site owners do not have the time or budget to do this. Another solution is to write fewer articles, but to make them cover a wider area. This will not result in getting rankings for even the long tail keywords mentioned, but many others will be caught and bring in traffic and links. Such posts have to be long but fewer are needed and that can be a better fit for those businesses with a smaller budget. If is at least another option.
