Top Tips To Get The Most Value From Your Recruiter

Top Tips to get the most value from your recruiter

As I mentioned in my recent LinkedIn post, recruiting can be quite hard, only quite mind, and making sure you are dealing with the right recruiter is important because as a candidate, the right recruiter will have your best interests at heart.

A recruiter’s job is not just picking up the phone and speaking to you, sending your profile over for a role, booking in interviews and getting you offers…

The good ones will also add value for you across the process.

They will get you to really think about, and then articulate, what your motivators are. These help you understand why you want to move from an existing position or towards a new role. A good recruiter will help with things such as interview prep & debriefs, an honest second opinion on your feeling and thoughts on the opportunity, they’ll work to secure you the best offer possible as well as keep you up to date throughout the process, and of course, general feedback!

With all of this taken into account, I’m sure you can agree a strong line of communication and a base layer of trust is important for both you, and the recruiter you’re working with…

Some recruiters, as we know, can be unreliable, and they can leave you with the wind without so much as a courtesy message telling you how the interview went or why the hiring manager decided not to proceed with the process!

You’ll find some top tips from me below as to how you can ensure you have a strong line of communication with your recruiter, and you have done everything you can, to ensure you are getting the most out of the recruiters you are working with!

i.????????????????????Ask direct questions

Asking direct questions can ensure you are getting the exact feedback you need – i.e. What was the feedback? Did she mention anything about what they liked and didn’t like? What would you suggest I work on before the next interview?

ii.??????????????????Book in times to speak

Booking in set times to speak will reduce the chances of impromptu recruiter calls. Doing so will allow you to prepare for the call, knowing what you want to get out of it in terms of potential interview information, any hiring manager concerns you can alleviate or anything else.

As an aside: if a recruiter is ringing you out of the blue, they probably have some news for you. It can be hard in the moment to remember this but it is helpful to have that conversation.

iii.????????????????Don’t be afraid to chase;

This one is self-explanatory to a degree...but maybe not to the level I’m suggesting.

If you are owed feedback by a recruiter and they’re being slow or god forbid, they are flat out ghosting you…ring them, ring again, and again, ring their general office number and make it known you are waiting on feedback, ring their mother, their dad and their grandma – one thing all of those have in common is they will not be impressed with your recruiter not doing you justice by giving you the feedback you have worked for, and deserve.

iv.????????????????Be honest.

A recruiter can only know what role to put in front of you if you are honest about what you can do, and what you’re looking for!

Those are the main 4 points of advice I’d give. There are no guarantees in this life but taking the right steps towards what you want to achieve, can guarantee you the best chance possible to succeed.

If you are looking to have a conversation with a good, honest, caring, and reliable recruiter, please don’t hesitate to drop me a message or give me a call, and I can recommend one of my colleagues who are worth a call ??
