In Conversation with Real Julien of J2 Approvisionnement: Creating an Effective Supply Chain

Real Julien, founding president of J2, recently joined Axya to discuss key takeaways from his 30-year career in supply chain management. Having worked for companies such as Bombardier, Julien founded J2 Approvisionnement in 2008 with the mission of helping companies navigate the implementation of effective supply chain frameworks.

Real shared the following advice for supply chain professionals:?

  • While 70% of businesses in Quebec experienced supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19, only 2% were able to effectively find solutions. A robust supply chain management strategy involves analyzing risks and understanding the complex and delicate relationships between of key actors in your supply chain.
  • The pandemic greatly changed the landscape of inventory management. It is more important than ever to focus on risk analysis and strategic partnerships, rather than simply stocking a consistent inventory.?
  • Digitization can play a large role in reducing supply chain costs. Teams should prioritize automating various tasks and using technologies to identify potential risks before they grow.

  • Cost of acquisition (COA) is an important factor to consider when making purchasing decisions. The COA not only involves product price, but also factors such as payment terms, shipping costs, maintenance costs and insurance. By taking a strategic approach and negotiating with suppliers, buyers can reduce their COA and thus increase profitability.?
  • Communication and visibility remain priorities in the supply chain management process. When all parties involved can understand a supply chain’s structure and provide feedback, companies can ensure that a supply chain is well-organized and constantly adapting to a company’s changing needs.

It was a very insightful session with Réal Julien, from J2 gestion d'approvisionnement inc.! I had a meeting this week with a supply chain director and I've heard yet again how challenging it is to manage inventory post-covid! Visibility and flexibility are two critical components of a healthy modern supply chain these days. The full recording is over here btw: ?? https://youtu.be/jzrgx3UbqYk?feature=shared
