Regardless of your job position, there are occasions when your workload can become daunting.
I've put together some strategies to help assist you! Especially if you work within an accountancy practice!
1. Getting Organised
Develop a detailed timeline and checklist to safeguard against missing crucial deadlines and to maintain a structured schedule.
Employ digital tools and software for efficient document management, ensuring all documents, receipts, and financial records are well-organised. Implement a schedule management system to enhance productivity and allocate more time for focused and in-depth work.
At the end of each day, clear your desk and plan the following day's activities in the morning to regain control over your workload and reduce overexertion.
2. Efficient Time Management
It's not unusual for accountants to work beyond their typical weekly hours, with some clocking in as many as 50 or 60 hours per week, as per Indeed.
The CABA survey uncovered that 72% of accountants attribute stress and poor mental health to extended working hours.
Allocate dedicated personal time now to prevent overcommitting and the risk of physical or mental burnout. Set goals to ensure that you reserve time for hobbies, family, exercise, or activities that recharge you. Protecting your time is a form of self-care that can enhance both your professional and personal life, benefiting not only you but also your colleagues and clients.
3. Task Prioritisation
Identify high-priority tasks and tackle them first. Divide substantial tasks into more manageable components to boost efficiency and reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed. Large tasks tend to consume more time and energy, so it's advisable not to take on too many simultaneously.
Be adaptable as priorities shift, and break down work into smaller segments, establishing timelines and involving others to share the workload.
4. Delegation
If you're part of a team, capitalise on the opportunity to distribute the workload evenly. Delegate tasks based on each team member's strengths to lighten the load and free up your time for high-value activities.
The CABA survey revealed that 87% of accountants attribute stress and poor mental health to heavy workloads, which can be challenging to decline but can be better managed. By delegating tasks that can be handled by other team members, you can allocate your time and energy where they are most needed. Delegation not only eases your workload but also offers growth opportunities for your colleagues, fostering their professional development.
5. Maintaining Motivation
Reflect on what motivates you and the work environment in which you thrive. Keeping your goals in sight can boost motivation.
Stay motivated by connecting with your purpose and identifying your ultimate objectives. Understand your identity, the nature of your work, and the reasons behind your chosen career. Finding deeper meaning in your work can cultivate a fulfilling professional life and enrich your relationships with colleagues and clients.
Create an ideal workspace to stimulate your productivity and a welcoming home environment to unwind and disconnect. Beyond work, nurture motivation by allocating time for family and friends, as well as activities that inspire and invigorate you.
6. Prioritising Mental Health
While working intensively during the first quarter of the year, accountants may find it challenging to seek mental health support. A CABA survey revealed that 36% of employees do not utilise their employer-funded mental health support due to time constraints. Moreover, 69% have not availed themselves of external mental health support.
Take advantage of the support services available, whether at your workplace or elsewhere. Despite your busy schedule, do not neglect your social life and allocate time for self-care, as neglect can lead to physical and mental health issues. Incorporate exercise, attend the gym, and pay attention to your diet, as these factors can influence your mood, mental well-being, and cognitive abilities.
7. Taking Breaks and Recharging
The importance of distancing yourself from work, even for short breaks, cannot be overstated. Avoid skipping meals or eating at your desk to prevent fatigue, hunger, or unhealthy eating habits.
Prioritise a healthy diet, engage in regular exercise, or take a walk to allow yourself to readjust and maintain focus. Frequent breaks provide accountants with fresh perspectives on their work and safeguard against burnout.
Perhaps most crucially, ensure you get sufficient sleep, as it enhances your mood, self-assurance, and cognitive skills. Inadequate sleep can hinder attention, learning, memory, and your ability to manage minor stressors. Establish healthy sleep patterns to enhance your performance and uphold your mental and physical well-being.
