Top Reasons You Should Ditch The Scale

When it comes to weight loss, one of the first things most people do is jump on the scale. However, there’s really only one thing that a scale can tell you: How much you weigh. And honestly, it’s not even a very accurate measure of that. After all if you eat a meal that’s a bit too salty, it will go up.

And changing your muscle-to-fat ratio can sometimes make it seem like you’re gaining weight when you’re working out harder than ever! So don’t let the scale be your only judge of progress.

1. Is the Scale Lying to You?

The scale will tell you how much you weigh. But what you have to keep in mind is that it measures everything. This includes your bones, muscles, organs as well as what you had to eat or drink before you stepped on the scale. A more important thing you need to know is your body composition.

While the scale can tell you how many pounds you are losing, it can’t tell you how much fat you are losing. Losing weight may make you happy but, what if you found out you were losing muscle, not fat? Losing muscle lowers metabolism and, eventually, contributes to a loss of mobility and power.

It’s possible to lose inches without losing weight, which means you’re getting results even if they aren’t showing up the way you’re used to seeing them. And that’s one instance where the scale definitely can lie.

2. Alternatives to the Scale

Are you losing inches, fitting into smaller sizes and slimming down? If the answer is yes, that’s a good sign that you’re gaining muscle and losing fat, which is exactly what you want. Instead of the scale, try other ways to track your progress:

  • Get your body fat tested.
  • Take your measurements at different areas of the body to see where you’re slimming down.
  • Go by how your clothes fit.
  • Keep a fitness journal to keep track of your weights, exercises and strength gains.

So don’t get discouraged if the scale isn’t saying what you want it to say. It can only measure one thing, and a loss of weight doesn’t necessarily mean progress. You can lose fat and gain muscle, but the scale won’t be able to measure this progress. Obviously scales can be useful, but it shouldn’t be your main measurement of progress.

The Scales Takeaway

All in all, scales can be a useful tool. However, paying too much attention to the numbers on the scale can hinder your progress. There are much better ways to measure your progress! And remember, the most important thing is to find a way to keep going even if the scale isn’t showing your progress.
