Cloud is getting traction in a lot of areas which have not been considered cloud friendly in the past. Now a days almost every enterprise has a cloud strategy or they are exploring cloud options. A few months ago I talked about IBM's Master Data Management (MDM) Cloud story to a user group conference in New York. IBM MDM on Cloud gives the flexibility of cloud and the scalability of on prem. We observe two major uses cases:
- A customer wants to start a new project on cloud from scratch. The reason is that they get more flexibility as well as the overall implementation is less risky. For some reason if their priorities change in future, they can just stop the monthly billing.
- A customer needs to setup a dev/test environment quickly to support a new project. Sometimes due to their internal procurement process and approval workflow, it may take several month to setup an on prem environment for development and test.
Executives also look at capex expenses differently than opex. So cloud fits very well for this scenario. We provide workload compatibility so customers develop assets on cloud dev/test and can migrate to their on prem environment or vice-versa. Also for new project, the cloud setup is very fast compared to on prem.
Keep exploring cloud, you'll get addicted:-)
