China's Metaverse Geared Towards Work and Health – Is This the Future?

One example of this is HiAR, an augmented reality company that helps local authorities in China identify mosquito breeding grounds via drone footage.?

HiAR was founded in 2012 before the term "metaverse" was popularized by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.?

In 2021, after Facebook rebranded to Meta in a?high-level push toward the metaverse, Chinese startups and tech investors started following suit, trying to develop their own metaverse technologies or integrate mixed reality elements into consumer products.

Microsoft Metaverse Halted by UK Regulators

While the CMA’s decision primarily revolves around the gaming market, it also has implications for the development of the Metaverse. The acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft would have provided the necessary resources to create immersive experiences within the Metaverse.

The proposed acquisition aligned with Microsoft’s strategy to invest in high-quality content, community building, and cloud opportunities to develop immersive gaming platforms. Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, emphasized the potential for gamers to play their favorite titles virtually anywhere they want. Finally, while Microsoft plans to appeal the decision, the outcome may influence the future of gaming and virtual reality experiences.

As Generative AI Drives Urgency for AI Regulations, Most Companies Unprepared for New Requirements

The European Union is set to pass the EU AI Act this year, the US Congress has taken up the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA) and the Algorithm Accountability Act in recent sessions, and US states like California, Illinois, New York and Texas have passed or proposed laws regulating AI. These laws create new compliance and reporting requirements around companies’ use of AI and machine learning, intended to protect consumers against privacy violations, bias in automated decision-making and other potential harms.

“Generative AI technology like ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion are raising issues around copyright, Responsible AI and cybersecurity that are helping to drive increased urgency around regulating AI. This trend is converging with the continued increase in regulations like the EU’s GDPR covering data privacy to make AI regulatory compliance a high priority for CEOs and board members at more than half the companies in our study,” said Manasi Vartak, Founder and CEO of Verta. “This is true for organizations in industries like insurance and financial services that traditionally have had ML models regulated via Model Risk Management practices. New regulations are increasing the complexity of compliance for these companies. At the same time organizations that traditionally have not been under significant regulatory scrutiny must now have MRM practices in place to identify, assess, mitigate and monitor risks associated with their use of ML models, and to ensure their models are fully compliant with a growing number of regulations.”

What was your journey like to get where you are?

Croquet was launched in 2018 and has been a wonderful journey into the next era of shared computing in the Metaverse. It’s a very exciting time for the company, with new product launches, customer announcements, creative partnerships, and edge infrastructure deployments planned by the end of the year.

In simpler phrases, what is your company exactly doing?

Croquet builds developer tools for creating 3D virtual Metaverse worlds. Croquet also builds global synchronization infrastructure for ultra-low latency shared experiences in the virtual and physical worlds.

What about Metaverse are you most excited for in the future?

The potential for the Metaverse, as a communication platform, to completely change and enhance how we interact with each other, personally and professionally, and redefine what it means to be human.

Why should we be paying attention to the Metaverse?

The Metaverse is here to stay and will ultimately become the default way in which we communicate with family, friends, and colleagues. It isn’t just for big business, fashion, or gaming. We will all be able to take advantage of the richness of the Metaverse to enhance how we communicate as humans.
