"ToP Job DAd!" Keeping it simple in career transition.

You can still make out my 6 y.o. daughter's handwriting on the work boots the family gave me. Lately that simple message has stuck in my head in more ways than one. 

I left SAP in April last year. I started when the ERP Y2K boom was barely a twinkle in the companies eye. That’s a very long innings filled with many different roles and some big changes in the business. Its rare that a company can grow, keep its people engaged and succeed the way that SAP has over so many years. At some point I knew that journey must end for me to make the next big career move. It’s been an honour to have had such a “Top Job” for so much of my working life. Thanks SAP!

Post SAP I put the work boots to serious use in a well earned career break. I demolished, shovelled, planted, concreted, stripped, sanded, laid floor, installed, crafted and generally did things my ageing body and skills just weren’t trained to do. The scrawled “Top job Dad” channelled my daughter and spurred me on. I also made lunch boxes and did the school runs. My new KPI’s included my after school “off-ground tiggy” performance and daily lunchbox consumption. Simple things were the highlight of my work break. 

So we start a new year and come to the next “Top Job”. I’m now at SNP. I get the irony. After 9 months to consider the next major career move I’ve picked another German software company with a scarily similar name.... and I’ve just been to another SAP FKOM with old familiar faces. Despite a big wide world out there beyond the SAP ecosystem it was an easy decision in the end.
