Top Interview Do's and Don'ts Part One

As a staffing and recruitment agency, we have done our share of interviews (read: thousands). Before getting into the industry, I thought everyone showed up to their interview the same way: prepared, groomed, and excited for the opportunity ahead. Now that I’ve been at this a while, it has become very apparent that everyone has not been given the interview playbook.?

If you have an interview coming up, make sure to check out these basic Do’s and Don’ts so you can make a positive first impression (and land that dream job!). They may seem like no-brainers, they may even seem silly, but they are the things that I see over and over again in the interview room, and you might be making the same mistake!

  1. DO Show up Early

FYI: rushing in one minute before your start time and needing to run to the bathroom is not early. You should be calm and coiffed and ready to say “Hello, my name is___” at least 5 minutes before the interview is scheduled to start. Hiring managers are often trying to meet people between other appointments, so you’re not screwing up their schedule for the rest of the day or adding stress to their lives is huge, and makes a wonderful first impression.

  1. DO Dress the part

If you are going to a professional interview, show up as a professional person. Clean, wrinkle-free clothing that fits well is always appreciated. You don’t need to wear a 3-piece suit, but things people love to see are: polos, button downs/blouses, sports coats, jumpers, nice t-shirts, slacks, nice jeans, skirts/dresses.? Do NOT show up in: basketball shorts, hoodies, pajamas, clothing that is too tight or revealing, t-shirts with profanity, a sports bra and shorts still sweaty from your workout, etc.?

  1. DO Know the Company

Do a quick google search and check out their website. Try to come up with a few pointed questions based on what you find. You’d be surprised how many people don’t even know who they’re interviewing with.

  1. DO NOT Use Profanity

Just don’t.

  1. DO NOT Start by Asking the ROP

Typically, pay expectations are listed on the job posting, so you should know going into your interview the rate or range. If, for some reason you don’t and you weren’t able to get the number from the hiring manager ahead of time, then wait to discuss the number you’d like until later on in the interview. *Side note, if you know the rate of pay but want considerably more than what they’re offering, let the hiring manager know before the interview. Also also, PLEASE don’t agree to one rate and then demand more once you are offered the position–no one likes this. In fact, they hate it. Very much.?
