Top influencer

What I am going to talk about is something I am guilty of myself. I didn’t question deep enough who I follow on this platform. I began only recently, hence my article about Bursting my bubble. I realised,I am following “one sided” opinions, but in last 2-3 months something new emerged for me.
One of Top 100 male linkedin influencer ( in Slovakia) has posted a screenshot of someone else’s post, where the person on the screenshot was asking their network if they reacted appropriately. It was about job post, one potential candidate wrote to this person privately asking about salary for the position. The person who posted the job offer reacted quite harshly saying that by this question, the candidate disqualified himself. The Top influencer stirred up a massive discussion on his profile. Now I see it as views for himself. I didn’t realise this, I was one of the heavy commenters myself under that post. One decent thing the influencer did was to black out the name of the person from the screenshot. The screenshot post becomes viral and kept being viral for few days. 3-4 weeks after, the author of original post emerged and posts on her profile public apology and explained the context of the screenshot. If you speak Slovak, here is the video: https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/lukacovakatarina_hodnoty-sebareflexia-ugcPost-7243595380444000256-5bR7?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop The video is more than 5 minutes long. The author showed integrity, humbleness and braveness. I am asking myself since, if I’d be strong enough to do something like this. I am worried I wouldn’t. I’d love if the person would be among the top Slovak linkedin influencers, because I see her as such. She isn’t.
I myself had occasions where I was too quick to judge some question, comment or lost control over myself because I was under pressure. However I was never scrutinised publicly and to this level ever myself.? That’s why it takes special kind of moral ground and honesty to do this kind of public statement. We can’t avoid mistakes, but owning them, we can.
I couldn’t find the post from the top influencer which went viral maybe it’s deleted … Who knows if it was an agreement between the parties or .. whatever else. Hope there is a good intention behind it.
Fast forward 3 weeks ago and I see yet another male Top linkedin influencer posting a video of a woman fast asleep in a not flattering position on the plane he flew as well to some destination. The main message of the post supposed to be, that not even a short form videos kept this woman awake. The influencer is a digital marketer so from his point of view this was funny and “to the point” of not being able to keep our attention span long enough. The sleeping woman had her phone playing on the same story or reel during the whole flight. The author even kind of “apologised” to an unknown woman for posting this, but in his view it was too good not to show the reality of digital marketing. Many liked, and laughed about the video. Some people mentioned that this is not ethical, filming a person without their consent and then blasting it on social media without even blurring her face. I commented along those lines too. I began a discussion with one other lady in the comments and when I went to reply to her in few hours, the post disappeared.
I waited 3 weeks now, because I hoped since this person has more than 10K of followers which for Slovakia is a big number, that some kind of apology or follow up , soul searching or anything owning the mistake will come. So far nothing. The author quietly deleted the inconvenient post. I rarely think of making a screenshot of something but i regret not taking a picture of one particular comment. One obvious father of daughters wrote, that he’ll warn his daughters against individuals like this influencer.
It makes me sad that I got so swayed away by the content which rarely has a depth, but the people have label of top influencer and I assumed is some kind of proof of high moral standard. (LOL). No it’s not. Let’s be aware who’s content we consume. Is it only shiny or does it have something which inspires us to be better people?
I am sure not every person labeled with Top influencer is automatically of shallow moral grounds. However it doesn’t shine good light on the community. Two bad apples in the span of 2-3 months ?? In January 2023 there was 704 000 users of Linkedin in Slovakia so among the top 100 means something. OR so I assumed.

I haven’t ever read a whole Bible and you won’t find me at church every Sunday, but I like:? “To whom much is given, much will be required (Luke 12:48)”
I think of it very often because with increased visibility and influence the pressure to make good decisions and have integrity increases a lot.
Coincidently both cases were men roasting women, even though the case #1 covered it until the person owned it and came out with the video. I am 100% this is unintentional, but I can’t get rid of a bad aftertaste.
I am going to do a clean up of who I follow here.
What do you think of these two situations ? Did you see either of them while they were posted ?
I found one lady who makes me think on linkedin even though I don't agree with everything she says Erika Eliá?ová https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/erika-eliá?ová-67218b1b3/ She couldn't care less with templates and carefully curated post with ???? etc.

4 个月I like how you think Lydi. I am personally very cold towards “influencers”. I do not follow almost anyone who is doing it as their fulltime job. This platform is somehow different for me, but still. Nothing which ich too much won’t be in my feed for long. I totally agree with you that managing the content we follow and who we follow is crucial. And the understanding that not every “top influencer” or even “influencer” must have good morals is also an important part of it all.

4 个月This is a good write up. It raises many topics from ethics to moral choices as well as consent and the pull for likes and followers. I have had a recent experience of a so called influencer coming onto this platform when they have Millions across all platforms yet when I have sent a direct message it is seen and completely ignored. I’ve seen another person comment ina post is this person about looking for work and that comment was ignored too. They do tend to loose the authentic touch because they have become disconnected with the whole people connection. Here on LinkedIn it’s really important to know and practice that this platform is built on genuine networking. It’s not for entertainment as other platforms have become.

4 个月In the first story, the influencer actually achieved a good thing, pointed to a mistake and made the person reflect on it. But criticism like that should be first discussed privately, he should have contacted the personalist herself instead of making it public. In the second story, it's a pure case of exploiting somebody else's weakness for increasing their own popularity. Very tempting, but definitely not right. But that's exactly the content that has a chance to get viral. The mechanisms of social networks use quite primitive parts of our minds - easy instant gratification, shocking content. It's how our brains are wired. Content that is meant to made us better individuals do not have such high click rates - unless it is wrapped in the same packaging, promising easy success and miracles in three days, or sharing information that attracts attention in the same way as when a traffic accident makes us stop and stare. Wondering if there is even a slight chance that a good piece of art, or a genuine story of people helping each other would ever show up on top of the viral lists. Probably not, because watching videos of somebody getting in trouble in a funny way would always be more attractive.

4 个月No one ever said that "Influencer" was a good thing. It just says that they influence people. Sadly I have a negative view of these "top 100" or "top 50 under 50" and so on. Making something go viral seems to be the "need" and whatever makes that go viral obviously is good enough. We don't need to talk about morals or ethics, we simply need to remember something called "Manners". It only takes a moment to be polite, it only takes a moment to be respectful. If you are willing to throw that out of the window for the sake of a post - then one should consider what that says about you. I wonder, if the photo of the lady on the plane, was a relative of the "Influencer" would they have done the same? So as I say to many students and those younger generations, just because it's popular, doesn't mean it's any good.
