Basically, global?hospitality labor shortages are now a big?problem?for businesses around the world. In Spain, the hospitality industry had from February 2020 until February 2022 a 5.5% fall.

Hotel Managers, the New Dean.

The role of Hotel Managers is about the change forever into a hybrid role, including more skills absorbed from HR managers, psychologists, Tech Geeks, and even university Deans.

For example, a university dean is an administrator who heads a department. Deans perform administrative tasks, are able to hire or fire employees, interact with students, and sets goals for the department as well as handle the day-to-day running of the university. So basically your hotel is now like a college, where you need to handle technology, train staff, and manage well-being among others. It's time to transform the way you see hotel management because the employee shortage and the need for more technology to do the same jobs are happening.

The fact is that understanding a new generation of workers and the process of digital transformation accelerated by the pandemic has changed the whole game. Whether you’re an HR manager or a Hotel Manager it’s wise to keep your ear to the ground and adapt your HR strategies when new HR trends fire up.

  1. Employee Satisfaction and Retention - Employee retention is a serious issue in the hospitality industry. According to a study by Cornell University’s School of Hospitality Management, employee turnover costs hospitality companies thousands of euros per employee. For large hotel companies with 500 employees with an industry-average turnover rate, employee turnover would cost millions per year.
  2. Investment in desk-less Workforce - According to a recent study, nearly 80% of the total workforce globally is considered deskless.?Think about this, On average, 80% of every single worker doesn't have access to a computer or a corporate email. Really??
  3. Well-being and Mental health - As a result of the pandemic, dealing properly with employees’ needs and understanding employees' challenges could help to balance family and work demands, improve their mental health, and reduce how this would negatively affect employee turnover ratios for your hotel organization.
  4. Workforce Education: Reskilling, Upskilling - Reskilling and Upskilling are two "new business techniques" to promote talent management. The difference between upskilling and reskilling lies in the objective of the training. Reskilling aims to teach your employees new skills, while upskilling focuses on developing your employees’ existing skills. You could even say that reskilling and upskilling are different sides of the same learning and development coin.

Final Word:

One thing is clear, automation, upskilling, and reskilling are here to stay. Mental health hasn't affected the hospitality industry directly, yet. But some people say that "The Great Resignation" hasn't come to Europe. Investing in your hotel workforce can be the key to keeping your employees in the next months. Thanks Joan, great analysis on what's changing for HR in Hospitality. I couldn't agree more with the first trend "People Analytics and Automation". In fact, I believe that, despite there are talks about automation everywhere, most players in the Hospitality industry are somehow underestimating the impact of this unstoppable trend.
