Senior market update
January 2023 has been a very slow month within the senior in-house legal market in London, as to be expected from past year trends. As bonuses become substantial the more senior you become in the in-house market, we traditional see a fall in live roles at this time of year. The data shows the number of roles within the open market for General Counsels, Head of Legals & Legal Directors to be down 63% on our last in the loop newsletter in early December. We expect this to continue into Feburary and into March. Once bonus season is complete, we will see the senior market bounce back with first movers creating backfills for the departing incumbents with the senior market usually peaking in June and July.
Junior market update
The in-house legal market at the junior to mid level remains very busy and extremely challenging for clients to obtain talent. At the junior level, we are still seeing a strong candidate led market, which means the candidates have more options than the hiring companies. Will this continue? Based upon our latest data we believe so. The London legal talent pool has been drained somewhat over the last few years, with the impact of european lawyers who left during covid now being felt, with many not returning post covid and with it now becoming harder to enter the UK without a role, this strong contigent of talented lawyers is creating a void in both priviate practice and in-house. Another contributing factor, is rising private practice salaries in 2022 which, coupled with the cost of living rising, and econmic uncertainity across the UK, has defintely decreased the openness of candidates considering moving in-house at least for the moment.
