Description: Isabella Stewart Gardner devoted herself to personally arranging works of art in the historic galleries of the museum. Her collection?included paintings, sculptures, tapestries, furniture, manuscripts, rare books, and decorative arts. Gardner passed away in 1924?but provided an endowment to operate the museum. Her will stipulated that nothing in the galleries should be changed, and no items be acquired or sold from the collection. On the morning of March 18, 1990, thirteen works of art were stolen from the museum. Because Mrs. Gardner’s will declared that nothing in the museum could ever be changed, the empty picture frames still hang on the walls, waiting for the return of their artwork. To this day, the crime has not been solved.?
