Keir Starmer, poised to succeed Rishi Sunak as Britain's Prime Minister, is leading the Labour Party to a decisive electoral triumph over the Conservatives.
Labour, out of power since 2010, outlines a foreign policy of "progressive realism," acknowledging the volatile global landscape with a commitment to practical diplomacy.
The party has also pledged to "make Brexit work" and seek "an ambitious" security pact with the European Union.
In a final bid to sway voters, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's efforts seem to have missed the mark. The Conservatives cautioned voters about potential tax increases under Labour's leadership. Meanwhile, under the stewardship of Keir Starmer, the Labour Party has secured a commanding lead with 412 seats, compared to Rishi Sunak's party, which has secured only 121 seats. A majority in the 650-member House of Commons requires a minimum of 326 seats.
As Keir Starmer assumes office, his initial focus lies on addressing pressing challenges and making crucial decisions in the early months of his tenure.
- India: He underlined the Importance of strengthening ties with India, in domains of global security, climate security and economic security as key areas of collaboration. He emphasized on robust relationship based on shared values of democracy & aspiration. - USA: “Deal with whoever is the President” in a statement; in other words, the relation b/w Britan and the US is “above the individuals”
- Europe: No thoughts on rejoining EU single market or customs union; however, can work around in removing trade barrier with bloc, to assist smaller organizations struggling with higher costs & compliance. Labour wants to seek a veterinary agreement that would reduce border checks on animal products, a hindrance for British farmers and importers, and mutual recognition of certain professional qualifications.
- Ukraine: Ukraine is due to receive $3.8 bn worth of military aid in 2024 and continuous support in upcoming years. Labour Manifesto mentioned: “With Labour, the UK’s military, financial, diplomatic and political support for Ukraine will remain steadfast.”
- Palestine: The next PM looks forward to recognize a Palestinian state, subject to a peaceful process at the right time.
- China: Long term & Strategic approach to manage relations with China. Especially when cyberattacks and reports of espionage links were in the news earlier this year.
- Royal Mail: Scrutinizing the acquisition of Royal Mail by Daniel Kretinsky under national security considerations, ensuring adherence to assurances given during the acquisition process.
- Junior Doctors: Addressing the demands of junior doctors for a substantial pay rise, which has impacted healthcare services, emphasizing negotiation to resolve ongoing strikes. They want a 35 per cent pay rise, having been offered a deal worth 10 per cent on average.
- Water: Addressing sewage pollution issues caused by privatized water companies, with upcoming decisions on potential bill increases to fund infrastructure improvements.
- TATA steel: Implementing a $635 million support package for TATA Steel's transition to a lower-carbon electric arc furnace, crucial for preserving jobs in South Wales.
- Shein: Monitoring Shein's potential London listing amidst concerns over labor practices and import tax exemptions, balancing market opportunities with regulatory oversight.
Keir Starmer's administration faces a spectrum of challenges and opportunities across both domestic and international fronts, promising a proactive and pragmatic approach to governance in the UK.
