Why Is It So Hard to Hire a Virtual Assistant or Consultant?
I’m going to share the Top 6 Reasons We Might Hesitate or Avoid Hiring a Virtual Assistant to help us in our business – and the important thing they all have in common.
There are lots of pain points around this topic for coaches and other solopreneurs.
And it’s not just when thinking about hiring a VA, but?any?kind of virtual help: hiring a consultant, or an online business manager – or even just going on Fiverr to hire someone for a relatively simple project.
But based on my own experience and in the surveying of scores of other coaches whom I?coach on business-building and productivity , I’ve boiled down the Top 6 Reasons? Why?We Hesitate to Hire Virtual Help…
So if?you’ve?been hesitating, deliberating, procrastinating, you’re not alone, and my guess is you can relate to most if not all of the following reasons…
ONE: I’m not sure exactly?what?to hire someone?for.
I don't even know exactly what tasks to give them. I can barely keep?myself?straight.
And do I need someone three days a week? Or full-time? Or on an as-needed basis?
Ya, it’s hard to know.
TWO: I’m not sure how to pick the?right?person to do what I need them to do.
Do I hire a Specialist or a Generalist?
The lower-priced person or the premium-priced – or somewhere in the middle?
Or…I’ve hired help in the past, but it never worked out – they couldn’t do the work better than I could, or they weren’t a match for my style of working. What am I doing wrong?!
For?me?early on, it was a lot of trial and error!
THREE: I don’t know?where and how?to hire the best help.
Do I hire someone directly through Fiverr or Upwork, or find a colleague who has a great referral, or go through a VA company?
And to do it right, it can be a long, arduous process.

FOUR: I have a hard time justifying the expense.
Or, “I'm?willing?to invest. But, um, can I get a VA for just a little bit of money?”
One coach told me, “I don’t want to invest in a VA because I want to keep all the money I’m making. But I’m coming to understand that if I don't invest, I'm gonna be stuck in the same place, I'm gonna just work myself into a grave -- I'm heading there right now.”
FIVE: I feel like I have to straighten up everything first; get things in order before bringing someone into my mess.
Which is kind of like putting off hiring someone to clean your house because, “Well, first I have to clean up the house.”
SIX: I’m afraid to let go of tasks!
This is a big one, especially for those of us who have even a teeny bit of perfectionism or control issues.
So those are the Top 6 Reasons We Hesitate or Avoid Hiring Virtual Help.
Maybe you’ve got another reason why you’re hesitating – and if so, please feel free to ping me:?[email protected] . I'd love to hear?your?pain points around this important topic.
The process of planning to hire, figuring out what and how to delegate, then properly managing those people – all require heavy-duty thinking. Deep thinking, really. Which can be in short supply when you’re “doing it all yourself.” But of course, that’s the point.
Now you may have noted what all of these reasons for not pulling the trigger on hiring virtual help have in common.
They are rooted in a LACK OF CONFIDENCE!!
We lack confidence in what we’ll delegate; in our ability to find the right person or if spending the money will be worth it.
Which leads to a lot of wheel-spinning…
One client of mine who’s a very successful coach and now has a great VA, described her previous hesitation as, “I'm running in this circle waiting to have all the answers I need to pull the trigger. It's like being in a roundabout, and I'm waiting to find the right exit! So I just keep going and going and going. And never getting help!”
