Top 6 New Features in the March Update for "Administrators"

Top 6 New Features in the March Update for "Administrators"

The following are my top 6 Administrator focused features in the March Quarterly update for MicroStrategy ONE.

MicroStrategy is transitioning from Java 11 to Java 17

This is an important new step required for on-premise sites that run the non-MicroStrategy version of Tomcat Web Server.

  • MicroStrategy ONE cloud hosted environments, or MicroStrategy ONE on-premise environments that use the bundled Tomcat version, will have the necessary changes automatically applied during their upgrade.
  • However, MicroStrategy ONE on-premise environments with their own Tomcat web application server "must upgrade the JDK to JDK17."
  • MicroStrategy Web ASP environments should not see any impact.
  • Customizations written using Java 11 versions should continue to work with Java 17.

MicroStrategy introduces granular control over HTML and JavaScript execution to enhance security.

I think almost every MicroStrategy customer has some HTML scripts located in Dashboards of all types. HTML is great for adding some additional functionality that isn't available OOTB with MSTR.

  • One important point to note is that if HTML and scripts were globally allowed before upgrading, they will now be paused by default after upgrading to MicroStrategy ONE (March 2024). The update activates granular settings and requires you to review and authorize HTML and script usage individually.
  • So, make sure you know which dashboards have HTML scripts, because it sounds like these will stop executing the HTML logic post upgrade...

MicroStrategy Storage Service and Google Cloud Storage.

It is always good to have more options. Now Administrators can configure Google Cloud Storage as the repository location for migration packages (aka MicroStrategy Storage Services) This is in addition to the previously available Azure and AWS locations. Love it!

Storage Services now includes Google Cloud Storage

User Group Governing Settings

I like this new feature that limits job memory consumption on a per-User Group basis (and I am speaking from experience on this one)

  • Users with the Administer jobs privilege can set a limit on the amount of memory consumed per job in the Intelligence server for each user group.
  • Administrators can set this limit through the Maximum memory consumption per job (MB) setting.
  • The Maximum memory consumption per job setting applies to all jobs except cube publishing and subscriptions. Once a job hits the memory governing limit, the job is immediately terminated / canceled.
  • Starting in MicroStrategy ONE (March 2024), if you select Automatic as the option for the Maximum memory consumption per job setting, the value that takes effect is 10% of the total memory. You can also dynamically adjust job level governing in low memory situations.

Job Memory Settings within a User Group

Set Dynamic Job Level Governing

Yet another memory management feature, which is much needed (and I am again speaking from experience on this one)

  • MicroStrategy ONE (March 2024) introduces the capability to dynamically adjusting job level governing in low memory situations to prevent large jobs from killing the system.
  • This is built on top of the User Group Governing Settings. The system's default job level memory governing setting is reduced from 50% to 10% of the total memory of the machine or container that hosts the Intelligence server.
  • When a low-memory situation happens, such as when the available total system memory is under pressure (less than 20% of the machine/container's physical memory), the governing setting is reduced to half the original value for each job. For example, it can reduce the default 10% setting to 5%.

Create, Edit, and Delete Standalone Database Connections and Logins

I've already checked this one out, and I really like it. Just one less reason for me to not use the old "Developer" tool. I've been waiting for this functionality for a long time, and I am so happy it is finally here.

  • MicroStrategy ONE (March 2024) now streamlines the ability to create, edit, and delete standalone database connections and logins.

Those are the key features that I found interesting for Administrators in the March update. Of course, there are a lot more. Check them out on the MicroStrategy website in the What's New page.
