The Top 5 WORST Things You Can Do on LinkedIn as a Recruitment Business Owner.

If you've been using LinkedIn to try and grow your recruitment business, and nothing seems to be working, then you might be doing these 5 very simple, but very easy to make, mistakes.

LinkedIn is a powerful tool for recruitment business owners, but you often end up feeling like you're playing against yourself and you're losing every time.

LinkedIn is always changing - once every quarter or so there is a huge update that often impacts the way content marketing is done, how visible your profile and business pages are, or something else necessary to keeping your business alive and active on LinkedIn.

Here's the top 5 WORST things you can be doing as a Recruitment Business Owner :

1. Not Mentioning Your UVP in the First 50 Characters of Your Headline

In 2024, LinkedIn's search visibility is more competitive than ever. When someone searches for recruitment services or business owners, only about the first 50 characters of your headline are visible in the results. If you haven’t clearly stated your unique value proposition (UVP) right at the start, you're missing out on potential clients who are scanning quickly. Your headline should immediately communicate who you help and what makes you stand out.

Fix: Instead of “Recruitment Business Owner | Specialist in Tech Recruitment,” try something like “Helping Tech Companies Hire Top Talent with a 95% Placement Rate.”

2. Being Too Salesy in Connection Requests

It’s tempting to jump straight into a pitch when connecting with potential clients, but in 2024, people are more put off by impersonal, sales-driven approaches than ever before. Sending a connection request with a sales pitch in the message screams inauthenticity. LinkedIn is about building relationships first, not closing deals immediately.

Fix: When sending a connection request, lead with why you want to connect and how you can provide value. Keep it conversational and genuine: “Hi [Name], I noticed your company is expanding in the tech space — I’d love to connect and share insights on talent acquisition trends.”

3. Neglecting Thought Leadership Content

Recruitment in 2024 is as much about branding and trust as it is about filling positions. If you're not consistently posting valuable, insightful content that positions you as an expert in your niche, you’re missing a major opportunity to build credibility. Relying solely on direct messages and outbound efforts makes you look like just another recruiter, not a trusted industry leader.

Fix: Share insights about industry trends, talent acquisition strategies, and even client success stories. Posting engaging content like polls, carousels, and video updates that offer real value builds your authority and attracts inbound leads.

4. Not Personalising Outreach

In a time where AI is making personalisation easier than ever, there’s no excuse for sending generic messages. Prospects can instantly tell when your message is copy-pasted, and it’s a quick way to be ignored. Recruitment is personal — the more tailored your approach, the better the results.

Fix: Use personalisation tools or take the time to research your prospects before reaching out. Mention their recent posts, company news, or something specific about their profile to show you’re paying attention and genuinely interested in helping.

5. Not Making a Newsletter

The best way to get people noticing you, and the best use of your time when making content, is to have a weekly newsletter. This is because, whenever you add people to your network, they get an automatic invite to follow your newsletter once you are connected.
