Top 5 Tips: "The Send-Away Slide Deck"?
Is this how you feel when someone says, "Can you e-mail me your presentation deck ahead of time?"

Top 5 Tips: "The Send-Away Slide Deck"

Ugh. The "Send-Away" Slide Deck Question.

Nooo!!

(What's a send-away slide deck? It's a PowerPoint slide deck you attach to an email to send to investors, prospects, etc.)

Ok here's the sitch... You have a call with investors or LPs fast approaching. They've asked for a deck to be e-mailed in advance of the call. You feel a tightness in your chest immediately.

What do you do?

This is a tricky one for so many of my clients. Panic can set in. Fear. Worry. Angst.

  • Do you send the same one you used to pitch live?
  • Do you load it up with the extra graphs in your appendix or leave those out?
  • Do you send all of it? Or parts of it?
  • How do you tell a story and infuse passion ... without BEING there?

--------------

5 TIPS FOR CRAFTING THE PERFECT SEND-AWAY DECK:

1. The deck must look ?? beautiful ?? and not academic (e.g. out of graduate school). No bullets and sub-bullets and on and on. It HAS to please the eye. (plug for?Mollie Rolf?and?Jennifer Stevens’s team at?Comprise, who help with the pro polish when my clients get to this spot, as I am not a fine arts designer).

2. Photos are a must! Big ones grab attention faster, especially in the first 3-5 slides (HINT: slide 2 is key).

3. Photos of people are critical, people experiencing the pain and the joy your innovation will bring.

This creates 2 things: identification and rapport. I see so many decks with no people. This means it’s all about the technology, and therefore all about you.

Turn it around. Make it about me and the people’s lives you will change.

4. *Some* full sentences are ok. Short ones. To explain the story and the passion, bc you aren’t there to do it. Briefly and strategically addressing the reader on slide 1 or 2 is a nice touch and can hook them to read further.

5. One idea per slide! Don’t tell everything now! Save some for later! Get them on a call! ??

I have not encountered this when we were raising money. Instead, we had to send a business plan, which they probably never read. But those are really good tips Cindy. It would make the content much more engaging and pique the curiosity of the evaluation team.
