Top 5 Tips for Keeping Your Electric Car Running Smoothly

Electric cars help reduce your carbon footprint while providing a relaxed driving experience. They are also great to own as they need little or no maintenance compared to conventional gasoline vehicles. Consequently, electric cars save you a great deal of time and money.

Structural Differences Between Conventional Cars and Electric Cars

Conventional cars comprise fossil fuel-driven systems, brake systems, emission systems, hoses, belts, fan belts, spark plugs, oil filters, alternators, and many other movable parts. In comparison, battery-driven electric cars have considerably fewer moving parts, including the electric motor, transmission, rotors, battery pack, etc., which requires minimum maintenance. Besides, electric vehicles have built-in regenerative braking, this system significantly reduces the wear and tear on the brakes and brake pads, which is a large expense in the maintenance of conventional gasoline vehicles.

However, all this doesn’t mean that your electric car needs absolutely no care! Refer to your owner's manual to know what kind of maintenance your electric car needs and how often. We provide 5 tips for your reference to ensure your electric vehicle is well-maintained and runs smoothly.

5 Tips to Safeguard Your Electric Car

1. ? ? ?Replace the cabin air filter

Unlike conventional cars, electric cars do not need air filters to prevent dirt and debris from entering the engine. However, they need filters to keep dust and debris from entering the car cabin via the AC vents. Typically, this filter is replaced once a year or when the air in your car smells stale.

2. ? ? ?Brake fluid flush

Although electric cars have a regenerative braking system, they also have a traditional hydraulic brake system similar to conventional gasoline cars. The system brake fluid must be flushed once every 3 to 5 years. This is because brake fluid is hygroscopic and absorbs water from the air. As time passes this water can turn to steam during a strong braking event and diminish the braking effectiveness. Consequently, you must replace the brake fluid regularly to ensure your electric vehicle's brakes are in perfect working condition.

3. ? ? ?Tire wear and tear

As in conventional vehicles, your electric car's tires will also experience wear and tear and must be checked periodically by a qualified technician at an electric car workshop. Apart from wear and tear, maintain the tire pressure as per the manufacturer's specifications as this extends the tire life. Your technician will perform spot checks for uneven or irregular wear, cuts, and other damage to the tires. You can schedule these checks at a reputed electric car service center or workshop every month. Some electric vehicles display the tire pressure on the dash, so you can do a quick spot check.

4. ? ? ?Check the gearbox oil

Although electric cars do not have a transmission in the same sense as conventional gasoline cars, they have a gearbox with a set of "reduction gears" that reduce the high RPM output of the electric car's motor to drive the wheels. In this gearbox, also called a single ratio gearbox, the clutch and torque converter are absent so the gear fluid lasts for very long, specifically, 8 years or more. Consult your electric car workshop technician and user's manual to know how often you must change the gearbox oil.

5. ? ? Check the coolant

Electric cars are often fitted with liquid-cooled electronics or a thermal management system circulating hot or cold liquid through the car battery. This fluid has to be replaced periodically; your owner's manual should tell you when, or you could consult your electric car service center technician. Often this coolant is the same fluid used in conventional car engines. However, since the fluid is not under much stress in an electric car, the change frequency will be low.
