Top 5 things I wish I knew when I was younger?
1. Promotions are given to those who are well connected vs. well educated. Early in my career, several people landed coveted positions and promotions that I frankly thought that I deserved. As I dug a little deeper, I realized that they had key relationships that advocated on their behalf. I was wicked smart and had information that was a mile wide. However, my connections were an inch deep.?
2. Quit your job and go to work. A job stands for just-over-bored. A paycheck is given to people who show up. Opportunities are given to people who work beyond what they are paid to do.?
3. Ugly Babies are the best projects to raise your hand for in your career.?Take on the assignments that no one else wants to do. That’s how I advanced in my career at two Fortune 500 companies when I finally figured out the game.?
4. Build an internal board of advisors in finance, operations, marketing, and the executive suite. Always keep your ear to the ground and know what’s going on outside of your department and division.?
5. Ask your boss or fearless leader what you can you do to make them look good. Yes, this is a major kiss up and a premium payment in career insurance. However, if and when the guillotine of reduction in labor starts to fall, hopefully, you’ve built in enough good will with your leader.?
