The top 5 Tech trends going into 2024
Each year, there are new emerging technologies that seem to take over and are becoming a bigger part of our daily lives. I've had a go at picking out the top 5 trends as we head into the new year.
1. Sustainable Technologies
It is obvious to me, which technology is likely to continue to take centre stage as environmental organisations work with governments to hit their net zero targets. To give you some examples of what sustainable technology looks like in your life, it includes LED lighting, electric vehicles (EV), carbon capture & storage, smart meters and waste-water generators, to name a few. I imagine the growth in this area will continue long in and beyond 2024.
2. Generative AI - Everyday Automation
It seemed to burst onto the scene in 2023 with the likes of ChatGBT and other chat bots. I think that this will be even more mainstream in 2024 as the world comes to grips with how powerful and useful these tools can be. That is, if people are not too scared to use it as they believe it may lead to the forming of a real life SkyNet or Ultron, but we don't have the Avengers to save us. Examples of what can be generated now by using AI - voices, code, 3D modelling, virtual assistants / chat bots, music, images and game development.
3. Cyber Resilience

It is a data war out there. Astonishingly, 50% of businesses have been victims of a successful cyber attack in the last 3 years and the resulting cost of damages are set to hit the £10-trillion mark this year. It goes without saying that this needs to be a focus for 2024. People work hard to create businesses only to have lazy cyber terrorists take them down. Cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated, and competition to bring new solutions leveraging breakthrough technologies like AI to market is intensifying. This ensures that cyber resilience will become an increasingly prominent trend throughout 2024 across business and consumer technology
4. Quantum Computing
Using specific elements of quantum physics, quantum computers are a great way to run numbers for accurate forecasting and other calculations. The buzz around it has been growing for quite a while and I think that 2024 could be the year that we really see it's benefits come to fruition. Banks and financial services companies have been particularly keen to see a development in this area, using it for fraud detection, risk management and high-frequency trading.
5. Phygital Convergence
We are seeing the use of VR and AR in everyday with the likes of the Meta Quest etc. which is seeing digital reality and physical reality become more intertwined than ever before. I can only see this concept gathering pace in 2024. Across industries, we see this with digital twin which is a digital interpretation of a real life object, process or system.
