As we mark National Apprenticeship Week, the theme this year is ‘skills for life’ – and I couldn’t agree more. Apprenticeships have had a lasting impact on my career, and I’ve seen first-hand how they shape not just your professional abilities, but your personal growth too.
When I first started out, I did a Level 3 Recruitment Apprenticeship, which helped me qualify and eventually step into a branch manager role. It was the perfect springboard for my career, and I’m now nearing the end of my second apprenticeship – a Level 5 Learning and Development course through Pertemps.
If you’re considering an apprenticeship, or just wondering what you’ll gain from one, here are the top five skills I believe you’ll pick up along the way.
- Practical knowledge For me, an apprenticeship has always been about getting stuck in and learning by doing. You’ll gain real-world, hands-on experience that you simply can’t get from a classroom. Whether it’s managing systems or perfecting software, apprenticeships give you a deep dive into your field, where you’re learning directly from the experts. This has been incredibly valuable for me as I’ve developed a solid understanding of how things work on the ground.
- Problem-solving No matter what job you do, challenges will arise. Apprenticeships give you the chance to work through those challenges, teaching you how to think on your feet and come up with creative solutions. In my own experience, there were plenty of moments where I had to quickly problem-solve, from managing a busy branch to adjusting on the fly with different team members. It’s this kind of hands-on experience that really prepares you for anything in your career.
- Communication Apprenticeships are an excellent way to fine-tune your communication skills. Whether you’re liaising with clients, writing reports, or collaborating with colleagues, apprenticeships give you the opportunity to build confidence in speaking and listening. I know from my experience that good communication has been essential in progressing within my career. In fact, it’s been a huge part of how I’ve moved up and around within the business.
- Time management One of the first things I had to get the hang of during my apprenticeship was balancing work and study. Learning how to manage my time effectively, meeting deadlines and juggling different responsibilities, has been a skill that’s stuck with me throughout my career. Whether you’re working in a fast-paced environment or trying to balance various projects, time management will always be a skill that serves you well. It’s helped me in everything from managing a team to handling complex tasks with ease.
- Collaboration Most apprenticeships will require you to work as part of a team, which means you’ll develop essential collaboration skills. From working with colleagues to managing group projects, you’ll learn how to cooperate effectively, resolve conflicts, and contribute to the overall success of a team. This has been another key area for me – being able to work with a variety of different personalities and skill sets has been instrumental in my journey, especially when I took on different roles and responsibilities.
