Without a doubt, the most important skill for testers, as identified by 59% of survey participants, is communication. Remarkably, communication skills have held the top spot in the State of Testing survey since its inception in 2013. This consistency reflects the cross-functional importance of QA in organizations. Quality assurance is not an isolated activity; it requires collaboration across multiple teams to ensure that product requirements are met. Testers work closely with developers, product owners, and business users to understand business needs and design appropriate test cases.

Moreover, communication skills are crucial when raising red flags. When severe defects are discovered, testers must report them concisely. A well-crafted bug report, complete with relevant data, can prevent unnecessary communication loops and help developers resolve issues more efficiently.
