WHY DO YOU HAVE TROUBLE MANAGING YOUR TIME?
Well to put it simply, it’s likely due to the fact that you focus more on the pain vs. the root causes of your pain.
HOW DO YOU GET BETTER AT MANAGING YOUR TIME?
SIMPLE – Figure out where your pain is, then focus on fixing the root causes that are the drivers behind that pain…
Let’s take a look at where you are experiencing gaps and pain regarding your time and then drill down to some of the root causes beneath this pain.
If your complaint is this, you may need to focus on the following:
1. THINGS TAKE YOU TOO LONG
If tasks take too long to complete your gap may be in time estimating… You need to TIME yourself on basic everyday tasks and stop inaccurately estimating and minimizing how long things take you to complete. Get real with your time and you’ll see a big difference. Better estimating means better judging how much time you need to devote to certain tasks.
2. YOU RUN LATE (A LOT)
If you are always running late? It is time to focus on time mapping and planning skills. You need to figure out a time to sit down with yourself and get real with what you commit to and how you spend your time. You see, your friends are getting sick of waiting for you. You ask a lot of the people around you and frankly – it’s pretty darn selfish of you to value your time and your ‘last minute things’ over showing up on time for others. You need to PLAN daily and weekly.
OR – You may be unclear about setting expectations to avoid hurting people. For instance, if you know you want to attend an event, but think it is going to conflict with something else, you need to set the appropriate expectation up front and say so! That way people will not “wait” for you, and celebrate when you do arrive!
3. YOU DON’T COMPLETE THE TASKS YOU SET OUT TO!
Are you a poor finisher? Do you have trouble completing tasks? You may be over-drawn, and under-delivering most of the time… if so, focus on managing your time and chunking out your projects into mini, doable tasks. You also may be the dreaded – HOPPER… a person who enjoys the adrenalin kick of starting things… but may get bored with the finish details. If this is you – you need to focus on knocking those incomplete things off of your list… one, by, one. If they’re no longer important to you or your success, then let them go, or if you don’t want to complete them – then figure out who will!!
4. YOU FORGET!
Do you forget things while trying to remember what to do? You need a better recording and reminding system! Focus on a consistent scheduling routine and decide on a reminder system with an auditory component. Then, set aside time to maintain your system
5. YOU GET OVERWHELMED
Do you drop the pieces and parts? Do you struggle to manage all the details? Perhaps it’s time for a data download…. Unloading your brain and all the details you’re keeping in short-term memory is bound to be standing in the way of your success! It may be time for a good productivity coach (like me!) to get you back on track and into managing your details.
If you can isolate your particular “GAP” (or gaps) in terms of what is NOT working for you, you’ll be able to better determine what you think you might need and use best.
