The top 5 reasons to celebrate National Introverts Week.

The top 5 reasons to celebrate National Introverts Week.

It's National Introverts Week, and if you're like me, you may have been completely unaware of the fact it exists. Yes, Introverts Week is a thing! But, it's not one we talk about, and we should. Extroverts often get most of the recognition, but introverts have much value to offer. So what are the benefits we should be thanking our introverted friends and colleagues for this week?

1. Deep Thinking and Reflection. Introverts tend to be deep thinkers who reflect on ideas and information before responding. This can be an asset in problem-solving and decision-making, as introverts may consider multiple angles and possibilities before making a recommendation or decision. The next time you sit through a meeting a think your coworker isn't participating, maybe it's because they are processing more deeply than those who are quick to speak.

2. Creativity and Innovation

Introverts often have a rich inner world and a vivid imagination, which can fuel their creativity and innovation. They may have unique ideas and perspectives that can bring fresh insights to a project or challenge. When you next find yourself stuck on how to overcome a challenge at work - seek the counsel of the quiet genius.

3. Attention to Detail

Introverts tend to be detail-oriented and focused, which can be an asset in tasks that require precision and accuracy. They may be more likely to catch errors or inconsistencies that others might miss.

4. Active Listening and Empathy

Introverts often excel in active listening and empathy. They may be more attuned to the needs and perspectives of others, which can make them effective collaborators and problem-solvers.

5. Independence and Self-Motivation

Introverts tend to be self-sufficient and independent, which can make them effective in roles that require self-motivation and discipline. They may be comfortable working independently and can be relied upon to meet deadlines and deliver results. This does not mean you should not incorporate an introvert onto team projects and collaborative activities, but it does mean you should respect and incorporate their preferred work style.

My favorite depiction of the introverted quiet genius is in the movie The Internship. Spoiler alert ahead. At the end of the movie the opportunity to transition from interns at Google to team members post-graduation all comes down to a contested competition. When the depicted all around villain and jerk of the film isn't satisfied with the results, he demands to speak to someone with authority. We learn then that the quiet and most introverted team member at Google is Head of Search, the most important role at Google. To watch the clip click here. While there are so many fun lessons in that movie, the one that resonates with me is never underestimate an introvert!

Take a minute this week to thank an introvert for their contributions. Just remember to do it in a way that respects their individual style.

100% relate to this. People that know introverts understand when they try to be social it just comes out awkward. Not that I would know. ;)

This post resonates so much for me, Jeff! I often encourage people to send me content in advance because I provide more valuable feedback when I have independent review/processing time.
