Applying on Crossover is your shot at landing a role among the world’s elite remote tech workers, but too many candidates destroy their chances with easily avoidable errors.

In this article, we give you an inside look at the five most common mistakes that will cost you your dream job - and how to steer clear of them.

??? Mistake #1: Applying for Jobs You're Not Qualified For

You’ve ignored the basic fit questions and have applied for roles despite not meeting the stated requirements. We call this one – the fastest way to get rejected.

Don't ignore basic fit.

We understand – being unemployed is time-sensitive and old school advice says that jobs are a numbers game. But they aren’t at this level.

Most people, 92% of them actually – don’t finish online job applications. You’ve heard that it takes 100-200 applications to get a job, with an 8.3% chance of an interview.

Those stats don’t apply here.

‘Quick and easy’ has no place in the top 1%. We’re not focused on presence, we’re focused on talent and suitability.

It sounds basic, but a lot of candidates apply for roles that aren’t meant for them. Every job on Crossover has specific criteria to guarantee the best possible fit.

If you don’t meet the criteria, you’re wasting our time and yours. Every single unqualified application ends in rejection. There’s never been an exception to this rule.??

Focus on roles that align with your skills and experience.

?? Mistake #2: Playing the Waiting Game with Applications

You’re waiting for feedback on one application before applying for another role of interest. This strategy is a recipe for failure.

Don't wait for us.

Don’t wait to hear back from one job before applying to another.

We don’t provide individual feedback on applications due to the high number of applications and the legal liability, and this is standard practice for companies like ours.??

On Crossover, roles close as soon as they’re filled. By holding off, you risk missing out on opportunities that could be bigger and better.

If a position interests you, apply immediately to increase your chances – and don’t wait around for a verdict.

If we’re interested in hiring you, you’ll know as soon as we do.

?? Mistake #3: Making Submission Blunders

You’ve submitted documents or videos with restricted access, requiring graders to jump through hoops to view them. These tech troubles are an immediate nope.

Make it easy for us.

Not granting universal access to written submissions or sharing videos that require logins will instantly disqualify you.

?? Check your submission links in incognito mode before sending them!

Make it easy for graders to review your work without extra steps.

?? Mistake #4: Ignoring the Importance of Preparing for the CCAT

Not taking the CCAT seriously is a fundamental mistake. So is using a calculator, or not getting enough sleep beforehand.

Be sharp for the CCAT.

The CCAT is designed to challenge the best and the brightest from wherever they come from in the world. We’re more difficult to get into than Harvard University!

Being mentally sharp is key.

Lack of sleep or relying on calculators during the non-proctored version of the CCAT will lead to lower scores. Trust in your natural abilities and prepare thoroughly to avoid unpleasant surprises in the proctored test.

The CCAT is rigorous, and shortcuts will only lower your chances.

Prepare properly or you won’t make it.

?? Mistake #5: Disregarding Assessment Instructions and Processes

You’ve failed to read and follow the specific instructions for assessments, leading to avoidable mistakes. Ouch!

Follow instructions though.

Not carefully reading assessment instructions, time limits, or evaluation criteria will lead to costly application errors.

Heather says, “Read the instructions for assessments carefully. Know whether you have a time limit, and whether you are allowed to switch browsers. Review the “how you will be evaluated” section and ensure your submission meets the criteria!”

Understand the guidelines thoroughly to make sure that your submissions meet all requirements.?

And if you decide not to pursue a role, inform candidate support instead of intentionally failing an assessment! Those results stay on your profile for six months.

Every detail matters.

Understand the rules and criteria so that you don’t get eliminated on a technicality.

Breaking into the top 1% of tech talent on Crossover is no easy feat, but avoiding these common mistakes can significantly boost your chances.

By applying only to roles you’re genuinely qualified for, acting swiftly on opportunities, and making sure that your submissions are easily accessible, you set yourself apart from the majority of candidates.

A well-rested mind and careful attention to instructions will make all the difference in acing the rigorous assessments.

Excellence is about preparation, attention to detail, and a proactive approach.

If you’re serious about joining the best remote workers in the world on Crossover, take these insights to heart and approach your application process with the precision and commitment it deserves.

Your dream role is a few mindful steps away.

What's the role of CCAT skill in the job? After say 20 years of college life when manual calculations are out of habit and use completely, it feels irrelevant. There was a time when deep mathematical calculation like differential calculus could be done mentally, not adding two numbers of 4-5 digits gives doubt ??. This reply is not criticism or anything negative. I genuinely want to know the purpose of CCAT in the context of hiring, say, a Principal Architect.
