Top 5 Lessons Learned in Tequila

Top 5 Lessons Learned in Tequila

Launching and running a tequila brand has been a transformative journey filled with valuable lessons for me. Here are the top five insights I've gained alongside my business partner and La Caza Spirits founder, Drake Screws and our amazing team over the past few years.

1. The Importance of Passion and Perseverance

Passion and perseverance are the bedrock of any successful venture, especially in the spirits industry. Building La Caza from the ground up required relentless dedication and a deep love for what we do. It's the passion for our craft that has driven us through countless challenges and late nights. Perseverance has allowed us to overcome obstacles, whether they be production issues, market entry hurdles, or logistical nightmares. This unwavering commitment has been crucial in establishing La Caza as a respected name in the tequila world. The Alc/Bev industry is certainly not for the faint-of-heart.

2. Staying True to Your Roots and Who You Are

In a market flooded with new brands making flashy entrances, it's essential to stay true to your roots and embrace the journey as an underdog. At La Caza, we lean into our identity as a craft brand, focusing on the personability and authenticity that come with being a startup. We haven't chased the biggest splash; instead, we've nurtured our fires and passion, making deep, meaningful connections with our consumers. This approach has resonated with those who appreciate the art of tequila-making and value a brand that remains in touch with its essence. By telling our underdog story, we’ve built a loyal following that appreciates the authenticity and dedication behind every bottle of La Caza tequila. Our ultimate goal is to be aspirational, yet attainable. We want our customers to see themselves in us.

Our Texan roots are strong. Grit, determination, and an unwavering work ethic are the qualities that drive us forward every day.

3. The Power of a Small, Yet Capable Team

A small, dedicated team can achieve remarkable things. Our team at La Caza is lean, but every member is highly skilled and passionate about their work. This tight-knit group has allowed us to be agile, make quick decisions, and execute our plans efficiently. Each member wears multiple hats and brings their unique expertise to the table, creating a dynamic and effective working environment. This collaborative spirit and versatility have been key to our success, proving that you don't need a large team to make a big impact.

4. Leveraging Your Network – No Matter How Small

Never underestimate the power of your network, no matter its size. When we started, our network was modest, but we leveraged every connection to propel La Caza forward. From initial investors and industry mentors to local partners in Jalisco, these relationships have been invaluable. Our network provided us with opportunities for collaboration, advice, and resources that were crucial in the early stages of our business. Building and nurturing these relationships has been a cornerstone of our growth strategy.

5. Speed in Execution

In the fast-paced world of spirits, speed in execution can be a significant competitive advantage. From production to market launch, being able to move quickly has allowed us to stay ahead of trends and respond to market demands effectively. This agility has been especially important in navigating the complexities of distribution and marketing. Speed doesn’t mean rushing; it means being efficient and decisive, ensuring that we capitalize on opportunities as they arise without compromising on quality.

Always keep yourselves and your tools sharp!

The journey of launching and running La Caza has been rich in valuable lessons for me personally and professionally. From the significance of passion and perseverance to the power of authenticity, a capable small team, leveraging a network, and the necessity for speed in execution, these insights have shaped our path and will continue to guide us as we strive to elevate our brand in the competitive spirits industry. Each of these elements has played a crucial role in our success, and I hope they inspire others in their entrepreneurial endeavors.

Salud!

Timeless principles that will sustain La Caza or any brand/org making waves in their space. Especially the team and velocity components. As someone who has succeeded in many commercial domains, the hardest skill to learn is to not rely on oneself as a single source of knowledge and effort, but to build a team around a common goal and watch it hockeystick in ways it couldn’t with the solo approach. That and velocity. The gazelle in the back is sure to be a snack.
