Hello Resilient Leaders,

Welcome to this week's edition of "Building Resilience." I'm Jose Pereira, your leadership and resilience coach?

In today's fast-paced and ever-evolving business environment, making the right decisions is crucial for success. However, even the most seasoned leaders can make mistakes that lead to failure.?

This week, we'll explore the worst mistakes a leader can make in business and, most importantly, how to avoid them.

A) The 5 Top Mistakes

  1. Lack of Vision: A leader without a clear vision can leave their team directionless, leading to confusion and stagnation.
  2. Poor Communication: Ineffective communication can lead to misunderstandings, decreased morale, and poor performance.
  3. Resistance to Change: Stubbornly clinging to old ways in the face of changing market dynamics can be disastrous.
  4. Ignoring Employee Development: Failing to invest in your team's growth can result in low engagement and high turnover.
  5. Lack of Customer Focus: Neglecting customer needs and feedback can lead to losing touch with your market and ultimately losing customers.

B) What to Do to Avoid Them?

?1. Lack of Vision:

? Develop a clear, compelling vision. ? Communicate it consistently. ? Involve your team in shaping this vision to ensure alignment and commitment.?

?2. Poor Communication:

? Foster an open communication culture. ? Encourage feedback, active listening, and regular updates. ? Utilize multiple channels to ensure messages are received and understood.

?3. Resistance to Change:

? Embrace innovation and change. ? Encourage a culture of continuous improvement. ? Be willing to pivot when necessary.?

?4. Ignoring Employee Development:

? Prioritize employee development through training, mentoring, and career advancement opportunities. ? Recognize and reward achievements to keep your team motivated.?

? Maintain a strong customer focus. ? Regularly gather and act on customer feedback to improve products and services.

C) Case Studies

  1. Lack of Vision: Kodak's failure to adapt to digital photography despite being an industry leader. Their lack of vision for the future led to their downfall.
  2. Poor Communication: Nokia's communication breakdowns during its decline in the mobile phone market. Failure to communicate effectively internally and with consumers played a significant role in their downfall.
  3. Resistance to Change: Blockbuster's refusal to adapt to the digital streaming trend, leading to its bankruptcy.
  4. Ignoring Employee Development: The decline of Yahoo, partly due to its inability to develop and retain top talent.
  5. Lack of Customer Focus: Blackberry's failure to keep up with consumer preferences for touchscreen smartphones, resulting in a dramatic loss of market share.

D) Authority in the Topic: Jim Collins.

One of the most authoritative voices on these topics is Jim Collins.

In his book "Good to Great," he stresses the importance of getting the right people on the bus, developing them for success, and maintaining a strong focus on vision, communication, adaptability, and customer needs.

About Jose Pereira

Jose Pereira, a former oil company executive with thirty-five years of experience and the former CEO of Citgo Petroleum, was unjustly detained and held captive in Venezuela as a member of the CITGO6, a group of six Americans employed by Citgo.

His wrongful captivity, based solely on his American nationality, lasted for 1,775 days, from November 21, 2017, to October 1, 2022.

Since returning from his five-year detention, Pereira has reconnected with his family and written his memoir. He stands up for Americans unlawfully detained overseas and strives to modify US laws concerning these crimes.

Pereira continues to leverage his experiences living and working in multiple countries to engender compassion in individuals of all ethnicity and across all cultural and political considerations to bring hostages home.

He empowers others to make positive changes in the world as he works to re-acclimate to society and is passionate about joining his voice with others intent on raising awareness.

BREAKING NEWS:

About the book: The book is 80% Edited and going out in the following weeks

"From Hero to Villain-My true Story of the CITGO6"

BOOK PAGE

From Hero to Villain-My true story of the CITGO6

Pereira's book is scheduled to be out in end of March 2024

It is a riveting account of the events leading up to and during the imprisonment of the CITGO6. Notably, during most of his detainment, Pereira and his wife engaged in a death-defying act reminiscent of Anne Frank secreting her diary from the Nazis. They smuggled letters to each other, which boosted his morale to keep living another day and inspired this book upon release. These carefully written words served as a vital resource for Pereira in outlining his memoir. The determination and bravery embodied by him and his wife in preserving these letters under such punishing duress add a remarkable layer of depth to Pereira’s story.

When you read his accounts, you are there with him in the gritty cell, enduring the agony of fellow prisoners, then finally rejoicing when he hears the news he is going home.

Pereira’s story has since evolved into a movement: changing the narrative of what it takes to bring the wrongfully detained home. This is a work unlike any other. The advent of critical change is making a difference not only in the lives of prisoners; it is transforming global politics around these cases. Sometimes, it is the quietest voice that influences and alters our trajectory. Also in the works: a guidebook providing recommendations to returning detainees to enable their successful reintegration into society—the only publication of its kind.
