Top 5 Houston Heights Restaurants

I've lived in the Heights a couple of times and it is truly a great neighborhood. I wish they would make more of the neighborhood part of the Historic District to stop the bulldozing of bungalows that could be renovated. Enough of that and on to my favorite restaurants on the east side of the Heights - pretty much all of these are off of Main Street and I-45 North.

  1. Street Food Thai Market - Thai - The BEST Thai restaurant in Houston. Everyone has their favorite one, but if you haven't tried this one you don't know what you are missing. Very authentic Thai cuisine and they have a huge menu. I alternate between a curry dish and Pad Kee Mao. Sometimes I order both and have enough for 3-4 meals.
  2. Morningstar - Coffee & Donuts - Have you ever had a vegan donut? They are amazing and taste just as good as a normal donut, albeit without dairy. They have the most extensive, fancy donut menu I've seen. They also serve breakfast and lunch items.
  3. Cantina Barba - Tacos - The best breakfast tacos in Houston! They are open 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day. Besides the tacos, they have one of the best cheeseburgers in Houston and it is only $6!
  4. Hughie's - Vietnamese - The best banh mi in Houston - make sure to add the egg! Also, vermicelli bowls, shaking beef, and any other Vietnamese dish you want. They also have fried shrimp (Mom's favorite) and burgers. Side notes: They are not currently open for dine-in service and I recommend going to their Main Street location (the other one is on 18th St.) and sitting on the patio.
  5. Teotihuacan Mexican Cafe - Mexican - Here's where you go for Tex-Mex that doesn't break the bank. Sure you can get fajitas or a grill platter which drives up your bill, but you'll still end up spending about half of what Ninfa's and El Tiempo charge. You receive both red and green salsas with your tortilla chips. The red salsa is spicy, which means someone in the kitchen knows what they are doing. I usually order enchiladas, but I've never had anyone walk away disappointed or hungry with their order.

Good piece here Emily. Yes, I agree, Cantina Barba has one of the best cheeseburgers in town, in fact, that is the only place where I will order a burger. Only 0.3 miles from my house ??
