The Top 5 Copywriting Techniques

The Top 5 Copywriting Techniques

Introduction

Copywriting is one of the most important parts of marketing. If your content isn’t written well and doesn’t connect with the reader, it will never convert into sales. Copywriters are a unique breed: they have to be creative, empathetic, and persuasive all at once. If you’re interested in becoming a copywriter or improving your own writing skills, here are five of my favorite copywriting techniques:

Write to a real person

When you write, make it personal. Write to a real person and use the word "you."

This is one of the best copywriting techniques because it helps you connect with your reader on an emotional level. You can do this by using phrases like "I know what you're thinking..." or "If I were in your shoes..." It's much easier to imagine yourself as a customer when you're reading something that seems like it was written specifically for them!

When writing in an authoritative tone (which can be effective), avoid using first person pronouns such as "I," "you" or even "we." Instead, use second person pronouns such as "you" when referring to your audience--this makes them feel like they are being spoken directly too!

Write headlines that make people click

Headlines are the first thing people see, and they're what draw you in. You want to use a headline that makes people click on your ad or article--but also one that accurately represents what they'll find when they arrive at your site.

The best way to do this is by writing headlines in the present tense, which makes them feel more immediate and urgent than past-tense headlines do. It also helps if you can get right down to business: Don't waste time describing what the reader will see on their screen; just tell them what it is! And finally, keep things short and sweet by using shorter words than longer ones (like 'of' instead of 'for').

Create a call to action in your content

You've written some great content, and now it's time to get people to take action.

The best way to do this is by creating a strong call-to-action (CTA). Your CTA should tell people exactly what they should do next, and why they should do it right away. It should also be easy for them to complete the action you want them to take--so don't make them fill out a form or download something before they can access your offer!

Use bullet points and numbered lists to keep readers moving.

Use bullet points and numbered lists to keep readers moving.

Bullet points and numbered lists are two of the most powerful tools in your copywriting arsenal, but they can be tricky to use correctly. When you're writing an article or blog post and want to get your message across as quickly as possible, using these techniques can help ensure that your message gets through even if it's a bit overwhelming at first glance.

Use them effectively by:

  • Avoiding jargon that only insider readers will understand (and no one else). For example: "The PPC campaign was targeted at specific keywords that would hopefully lead people who searched for those terms into our site." Instead say something like "We created ads for people searching for certain keywords." You don't need all this extra jargon; explain things in plain English so everyone understands what's going on!
  • Breaking up large blocks of text into smaller chunks with bullet points or numbered lists--this makes it easier for readers' eyes not only because there isn't such a big chunking together but also because each point stands out from the others due being separated by indents/spaces between lines instead being grouped together like paragraphs do normally when we write normally without any formatting changes applied beforehand

Use Power Words.

Power words are the tools of your trade. They're the words that are going to get your audience excited and engaged, so it's important to know which ones work best for you.

Here are some power words (and phrases) you can use:

  • Actionable - This word implies that whatever is being talked about has a direct impact on the listener's life, whether it be something they can do right now or something they should start thinking about doing soon. For example: "You need this product if you want your business to grow."
  • Urgent - Urgent messages create an immediate sense of urgency in our minds by implying that there may be consequences if we don't act quickly enough or don't act at all! For example: "If you don't buy our product today, we'll run out!"

Takeaway:

  • Write to a real person. Make your content relatable by writing in the second person, as if you were speaking directly to the reader.
  • Create headlines that make people click. Headlines are the first thing readers see, so they need to be compelling and inviting to get them interested in reading more of your article or blog post. Convey what's in it for them--what problem will this solve for them?
  • Use call-to-action language throughout your copy: "Click here now!" or "Learn how I did it." These phrases give readers an actionable prompt that encourages them to take immediate action on whatever you're offering (such as signing up for an email list).
